2009 Record: 3-9 MWC Record: 0-8 2010 Returning Starters: 16: 4 Offense, 10 Defense, Kicker, Punter
Coach: Steve Fairchild (Colorado State and overall: 10-15, 2 years)
Offensive Coordinators: Pat Meyer Defensive Coordinators: Larry Kerr
2010 Colorado State Players to Watch: WR T.J. Borcky, LB Mychal Sisson, RB John Mosure, LB Ricky Brewer, CB Momo Thomas
2010 Colorado State Strengths:
The Rams have depth in the running game to help support a rookie quarterback. Brewer’s retum from suspension gives Colorado State a defensive leader and a solid group at linebacker. He had 104 tackles in 2008, eamlng honorable mention all-league honors.
2010 Colorado State Weaknesses:
This is a bad one-two punch: An almost new offensive line will protect a raw quarterback. And there isn’t much depth in the receiving corps to bring along that new quarterback. The pass rush needs major improvement, and the program has long forgotten how to win.
2010 Colorado State Offense:
Starting a true freshman quarterback is the trendy thing to do in the Mountain West. Utah and Wyoming did it last fall. BYU has a freshman-in-waiting this season, and Colorado State has a 50 percent chance of going with true freshman Pete Thomas, a four-star recruit who originally committed to Arizona State. The other 50 percent option is redshirt freshman Nico Ranieri. With that proclamation, the only CSU quarterback with significant snaps, former junior college transfer Jon Eastman, promptly transferred to an NAIA schooL The only other realistic possibility is junior T.J. Borcky, who has made a dizzying shuttle between receiver and quarterback in his career. Borcky looked like the best receiver coming out of the spring and could always be used as a Wildcat quarterback. One incentive for Fairchild to go with a freshman is that CSU has had a first-time senior starter in each of his first two seasons. Fairchild, a former Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator, wants to establish some continuity at the position, even if it means some growing pains in September. The running game will have more maturity than at quarterback. Seniors John Mosure and Leonard Mason return with a combined 1,416 yards from last season. Both fit the CSU power mold. A change of pace this season is UCLA transfer Raymond Carter, who offers a speed dimension. Lou Greenwood played as a true freshman, but has since moved to receiver. Redshirt freshman Chris Nwoke might be the best back of the bunch. Regardless of the running back, four new starters on the line could determine success on the ground.
2010 Colorado State Defense:
The Rams only needed the return of senior linebacker Ricky Brewer to start looking like a legitimate defense again. With Brewer suspended for the 2009 season following an undisclosed team violation, and the rest of the linebacking corps riddled by injury, the Rams allowed opponents to convert an MWChigh 54 percent of their third-down chances. Although there are no superstars on the defensive line, the linebacker corps is deeper as a result of last year’s misery. Joining Brewer is the one returning standout from last season – fellow outside linebacker Mychal Sisson. The secondary is showing signs of improvement. There’s experience at every position, and the breakthrough spring of the bunch came from safety Mike Orakpo, the younger brother of former Texas defensive lineman and Washington Redskins 2009 first-round pick Brian Orakpo.
2010 Colorado State Special Teams:
The kicking game returns in solid fashion with Ben DeLine (12 of 16 field-goal attempts) and punter Pete Kontodiakos (40.9-yard average). Leading kick returner Dion Morton is gone, but cornerback Momo Thomas and Greenwood bring some speed and experience.

2010 Colorado State Predictions:
This program was among the best in the Mountain West from 1999-2003, but it has declined precipitously since then. The Rams showed signs of improvement in Fairchild’s first season, but the gap between them and the MWC’s Big Three – TCD, BYU and Utah – isn’t getting any shorter.
