2009 Record: 3-9 Big 12 Record: 2-6 2010 Returning Starters: 17: 9 Offense, 7 Defense, Kicker

Coach: Dan Hawkins (Colorado 16-33, 4 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Eric Klesau Defensive Coordinators: Ron Collins

2010 Colorado Players to Watch: QB Tyler Hansen, RB Rodney Stewart, WR Toney Clemons, WR Scotty McKnight, WR Markques Simas, CB Jimmy Smith, CB Jalil Brown, LB Jon Major

2010 Colorado Strengths:
The Buffs have nine starters on offense back from last year. plus seven others on offense who logged startIng time, Including two veteran quarterbacks. The best offensive player on the roster might be Clemons, atransfer from Michigan.

2010 Colorado Weaknesses:
The Buffs haven’t been consistent in the running game on either side of the ball under Hawkins. Last season. they ranked 113th In rushing offense. This team needs abigger back.

2010 Colorado Offense:

Once again there’s uncertainty about the starting quarterback entering fall camp. But this is the hrst time since 2006 that the coach’s son, Cody Hawkins, isn’t the favorite to earn the job. Junior Tyler Hansen, who started the hnal seven games last season, did enough to keep his name atop the depth chart in spring drills. He’s more of an all-around weapon than Hawkins because of his ability to make plays on the run. Hansen needs to complete a higher percentage of his passes, make better and faster decisions, and limit his interceptions. He threw for more than goo yards in last season’s hnal four games and seemed to be growing up. Colorado has its strongest group of receivers in years, led by senior Scotty McKnight, a former walk-on. McKnight could become the program’s all-time leading receiver in the season opener. Rodney Stewart and fellow junior Brian Lockridge are the only experienced running backs, but walk-on Quentin Hildreth stood out in the spring and four freshmen tailbacks are being added in August. The line is a veteran group, led by all-conference left tackle Nate Solder.

2010 Colorado Defense:

The Buffaloes hgure to playa little more zone than they have in the past under new secondary coach Ashley Ambrose, a former NFL star. The idea is to make it easier on the players mentally. Senior cornerbacks Jimmy Smith and Jalil Brown are the strength of the unit. They combined for 25 pass breakups and four interceptions last season, even though Brown wasn’t a regular starter. Strong safety Anthony Perkins is the top returning tackler. Free safety Ray Polk, a converted running back, is one of the best athletes on the team. Colorado will rely on senior B.J. Beatty, the only returning starter in the linebacking corps. But others have some experience, including senior middle linebacker Michael Sipili and sophomore Jon Major, who seemed back to his normal self late last year after a knee injury ended his 2008 season.

2010 Colorado Special Teams:

The Buffs excelled last season returning kickoffs. Everything else was ineffective. Colorado was 113th in the nation in net punting and 117th in punt returns. The team adds redshirt freshman punter Zach Grossnickle to the mix, but even he was inconsistent in the spring. True freshman Justin Castor could win the job in August. The real concern is placekicking. The Buffs have made just 15 of 32 held-goal attempts over the past two seasons. Senior Aric Goodman, who has been responsible for most of that, is coming off hip surgery late in the spring.

2010 Colorado Predictions:

Every player and coach in the program has been recruited or hired by Dan Hawkins. Experience and depth have been lacking in the past, but now might be strengths. There are no excuses remaining. If the Buffs don’t at least get to a bowl game, count on a coaching change.
