2009 Record: 9-5 ACC Record: 6-2 (1st, Atlantic) 2010 Returning Starters: 16: 7 Offense, 7 Defense, Punter, Kicker

Coach: Dabo Swinney (Clemson and overall: 13-8, 2years)

Offensive Coordinators: Billy Napier Defensive Coordinators: Kevin Steele

2010 Clemson Players to Watch: OB Kyle Parker, RB Andre Ellington, WR Jaron Brown, DE Da’Ouan Bowers, CB Marcus Gilchrist. SDeAndre McDaniel

2010 Clemson Strengths:
The defense should be stout, particularly up front. Parker should only get better after an impressive debut in 2009. Jamie Harper and Ellington should give the Tigers adynamic backfield. Guard Antoine McClain and tackle Landon Walker give the Tigers aphysical presence on the right side of the offensive line.

2010 Clemson Weaknesses:
Who will emerge at receiver? The offensive line has paper-thin depth, and just one or two injuries could create adire predicament. Linebacker could be an issue again. Has kicker Richard Jackson exorcized the mental demons that plagued him late last season?

2010 Clemson Offense:

Kyle Parker was impressive as a redshirt freshman, guiding the Tigers to nine victories while throwing 20 touchdown passes and completing 55.6 percent of his passes. He’s remarkably unruffled under pressure and is able to quickly recover from mistakes. The line made significant improvement last season, helping the rushing numbers improve to 170-4 yards per game from 111 in 2008. The top six linemen have combined for 88 career starts, but beyond that there’s little experience. Tailback Andre Ellington does not have C.J. Spiller’s superhuman moves or breakaway speed, but the third-year sophomore does hit the hole with more decisiveness. Jamie Harper has become a more physical runner and £lgures to team with Ellington to give the offense a nice between-the-tackles presence. Veteran Xavier Dye is the leading returning receiver, and he had just 14 catches in 2009. Jaron Brown could emerge as a playmaker at receiver this season, as could Bryce McNeal. Sophomore tight end Dwayne Allen replaces Michael Palmer and could end up being the Tigers’ leading receiver.

2010 Clemson Defense:

Jarvis Jenkins and Brandon Thompson anchor the interior up front. Beyond those two future NFL players are three veterans who might be starting elsewhere: Jamie Cumbie, Rennie Moore and Miguel Chavis. On the edges, Ricky Sapp is gone. But there’s little reason to think the Tigers will suffer a drop-off with Da’Quan Bowers, Andre Branch, Kourtnei Brown and Malliciah Goodman all returning. The secondary lost cornerbacks Chris Chancellor and Crezdon Butler, who started a combined 84 games. Senior Byron Maxwell steps in at one of the comer spots, and Marcus Gilchrist moves into the other. The Tigers are stout at safety with LindyJs preseason All-American DeAndre McDaniel and Rashard Hall. The weakness is at linebacker, a position whose de£lciencies were costly in a loss at South Carolina in the regular-season £lnale, and in the ACC title game defeat to Georgia Tech. Sophomore Corico Hawkins could supplant veteran Brandon Maye in the middle. If that happens, Maye £lgures to contend with redshirt sophomore Jonathan Willard on the weakside. Coordinator Kevin Steele played a lot of nickel coverage last season; count on him doing the same thing this year.

2010 Clemson Special Teams:

Last year, Richard Jackson made 11 of his £lrst 13 field goal attempts, but went 9 of 18 thereafter. He is contending with Spencer Benton for the starting job. Punter Dawson Zimmerman has a big leg, but has struggled with consistency.

2010 Clemson Predictions:

Is the Tigers’ window of opportunity in the Atlantic Division closing with Florida State rediscovering its purpose under Jimbo Fisher? This team has the talent to win the ACC, but losing Spiller clearly hurts. Still, Clemson has to be considered a threat because of its defense. If a receiver or two emerges and the offensive line stays healthy, the Tigers could end up landing in the ACC title game again. The Tigers, though, have to play the Seminoles in Tallahassee.
