Coach: Chris Petersen (Boise State and overall: 49-4, 4 years)

Offensive Coordinators: Bryan Harsin Defensive Coordinators: Pete Kwiatkowski

2010 Boise State Players to Watch: QB Kellen Moore, TB Jeremy Avery, WR Austin Pettis, WR Titus Young. OL Nate Potter, DE Ryan Winterswyk, DT Billy Winn, S Jeron Johnson

2010 Boise State Strengths:
Moore finished second In the nation in passing efficiency as a sophomore with just three interceptions. He has several dynamic options on offense. The big-play defense produced 35 turnovers and 26 sacks last year, confounding quarterbacks.

2010 Boise State Weaknesses:
Coaches are on the lookout for any hint of complacency, the biggest enemy of ateam this loaded. Depth also could be an issue at certain positions – quarterback. wide receiver and safety, in particular.

2010 Boise State Offense:

Junior quarterback Kellen Moore finished second in the nation in passing efficiency last year. He has thrown 64 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions in his two seasons, posting a 26-1 record. But that’s not the truly scary part for opposing defenses. Moore is surrounded by tremendous talent this season: Senior wide receivers Titus Young and Austin Pettis combined for 29 touchdowns last year; tailbacks Jeremy Avery, Doug Martin and D.J. Harper accounted for 2,200 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns; and tight ends Tommy Gallarda and Kyle Efaw exploited the holes created by all that speed. Harper is an X-factor because he led the team in rushing last season before a torn ACL in his knee ended his season in the third game. He was able to redshirt, and his rehabilitation has progressed ahead of schedule. The offensive line is loaded, too. Eight players with starting experience are available this year plus a pair of promising but untested left tackles. Nate Potter, a junior, earned All-WAC honors at left tackle last year, but moved to left guard in the spring to beef up the interior.

2010 Boise State Defense:

The Broncos fought inconsistency last year, but they dominated their two highest-ranked opponents – Oregon in the opener and Texas Christian in the Fiesta Bowl. The bugaboo was allowing the big play, so preventing those was an emphasis in spring ball for new coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski. The line could produce four All-WAC honorees this year. Senior end Ryan Winterswyk is a Defensive Player of the Year candidate with 19 career sacks. Juniors Shea McClellin (end) and Billy Winn (tackle) are rising stars. The linebacker corps could be terrific if senior Derrell Acrey, a career part-time starter, plays in the middle like he performed in spring ball. Junior Aaron Tevis and sophomore J.C. Percy put up big numbers on the weak side last year. The secondary includes two-time leading tackler Jeron Johnson at safety, Fiesta Bowl defensive MVP Brandyn Thompson at cornerback and All WAC second-teamer Winston Venable at nickel back. Junior safety George Iloka also returns – leaving just one hole, at cornerback, where the Broncos lost NFL first-rounder Kyle Wilson.

2010 Boise State Special Teams:

Senior Kyle Brotzman was awful on field goals from the left hash last year, a problem he must address. He also was inconsistent with his punting but has a knack for pinning opponents deep in their own territory in big games. Young is dynamic. He scored twice on kickoff returns last year and likely will return punts this year, too.

2010 Boise State Predictions:

The season hinges on the opener against Virginia Tech in Landover, Md. If the Broncos survive that, they’ll be favored the rest of the way – including a home game against Oregon State in September and a road game at Nevada in late November. Then it would be up to the voters to decide whether they’re worthy or not of a BCS title shot.
