While the 2010 NCAA college football season does not start for a couple of weeks it is not too early to take a look at each of the major conferences to see which teams have the best chance to end up in this year’s BCS Championship Game. Today we take a look at all the teams in the Big 12 Conference along with their current odds to win a national title.

Big 12 North

Nebraska – Current odds to win a National Championship: 15-1

2009- Overall record 10-4     Conference record 6-2        Home 6-3   Away 4-1

Nebraska 2010 Outlook – With Nebraska accepting a bid to join the Big 10 Conference effective July of 2011, this will be their last season in the conference. For their final campaign they return 10 starters on offence led by QB Zac Lee. WR’s Niles Paul and Curenski Gilleylen will be Lee’s primary targets. Last season Paul led the team with 796 yards receiving. The rushing attack will be led by RB Roy Helo Jr., who has averaged close to six yards a carry over the past two seasons. Ndamukong Suh is gone to the NFL but the Cornhuskers defense will still be a force with Jarad Crick and Pierre Allen still in the lineup.

Missouri - BSC Championship Odds: 75-1

2009- Overall record 8-5     Conference record 4-4         Home 3-4   Away 5-1

Missouri 2010 Outlook – Missouri’s offense will be the strength of this team in 2010 as they return eight starters from last year. QB Blaine Gabbert is back and should be able pick up where he left off as he still has a strong supporting cast. Last season he threw for 3,593 yards and 24 touchdowns completing close to 60% of his passes. They have four starters returning on the offensive line which is also a major plus. The Tigers did give up a ton of yards and points down the stretch last season so defense remains the primary concern for this team heading into 2010.

Kansas State - BCS Championship Odds: 125-1

2009- Overall record 6-6     Conference record 4-4         Home 5-1    Away 1-5

Kansas State 2010 Outlook – Kansas State has brought back Bill Snyder for a second go round as head coach. Unfortunately he starts off with the tall task of rebuilding a program that has quite a few holes on both sides of the ball. QB Carson Coffman should be the starter but expect the Wildcats to use their running game to carry this team. Seven starters return on defense led by Brandon Harold who should see action at both the end and tackle. The secondary has a solid core of cornerbacks and safeties and should be the primary strength of this unit.

Iowa State - BCS Championship Odds: OFF

2009- Overall record 7-6       Conference record 3-5        Home 5-3   Away 2-3

Iowa State 2010 Outlook – After solid 2009 campaign that ended in a bowl appearance, head coach Paul Rhodes has his team extremely optimistic for 2010. They have eight starters returning on offense including tailback Alexander Robinson who rushed for 1,195 yards last year. The defense only returns four starters but they will have David Sims back. Sims led the Cyclones with five interceptions in 2009. One area of concern could be at linebacker where there will be three new faces in the lineup with little or no experience.

Colorado - BCS Championship Odds: OFF

2009- Overall record 3-9       Conference record 2-6         Home 3-3     Away 0-6

Colorado 2010 Outlook – Colorado is another team that has decided to leave the conference after this season, accepting an invitation to join the PAC 10 starting in 2011. The Buffaloes finished ranked last in the Big 12 in offense in 2009, but they will have 10 starters returning so experience might be on their side. One big positive is that WR Scotty McKnight will be back. He led the team last year with 895 yards receiving. Their defense struggled as well giving up an average of 29 points per game and the jury is still out on this year’s unit.

Kansas - BCS Championship Odds: OFF

2009- Overall record 5-7      Conference record 1-7         Home 4-3     Away 1-4

Kansas 2010 Outlook – The first priority for new head coach Turner Gill will be to find a new starting QB. Right now it appears that Kale Pick or redshirt freshman Jordan Webb should get the call as they both looked the best this past spring; however transfer Quinn Mecham could also figure in the mix. Jake Laptad, who recorded 6 ½ sacks in 2009 will lead the defense and along with five other starters in the interior, should make the Jayhawks fairly solid up front.

Big 12 South

Texas – BCS Championship Odds: 14-1

2009- Overall record 13-1        Conference record 8-0 (Big 12 Champions)      Home 7-0    Away 6-1

Texas 2010 Outlook – While they almost won a national title last year, Texas has a new claim to fame; saving the Big 12 by deciding to stay in the conference. QB Garrett Gilbert, who was pressed into service in last year’s national title game, will replace Colt McCoy as the starter. While he has a capable arm, the Longhorns will look to run the ball behind a trio of running backs led by Tre’ Newton. With DE Sam Acho and CB Chykie Brown back for another season, the defense could actually be almost as good as last year.

Oklahoma State – BCS Championship Odds: 10-1

2009- Overall record 10-3         Conference record 6-2            Home 5-2     Away 5-1

Oklahoma State 2010 Outlook – Oklahoma State’s offense may struggle a bit out of the gate as there will be a number of new faces in the lineup. 27 year old QB Brandon Weedon appears to be the starter but true freshman Johnny Deaton may see some action as well. RB Kendall Hunter will be the primary ball carrier and WR Hubert Anyiam should be their No.1 receiver. The defense lost nine starters from last year so all those new faces on that side of the ball will need to quickly come together to avoid a rough start.

Texas Tech - BCS Championship Odds: 80-1

2009- Overall record 9-4             Conference record 5-3           Home 6-2     Away 3-2

Texas Tech 2010 Outlook – New head coach Tommy Tuberville’s first job will be to get this team to quickly put the past behind them and focus on the future. Eight starters return on offense including a solid core of receivers and QB’s Taylor Potts and Steven Sheffield who are each more than capable of filling the starting role. The strength of the defense should be in the secondary with the return of CB LaRon Moore and S Brett Dewhurst.

Oklahoma – BCS Championship Odds: 15-2

2009- Overall record 8-5              Conference record 5-3             Home 6-1      Away 2-4

Oklahoma 2010 Outlook – QB Landry Jones, who filled in for Sam Bradford last year as a redshirt freshman will lead Oklahoma’s offense. WR Ryan Broyles should be one of his favorite targets after leading the team with 1,120 receiving yards last year as a sophomore. Another big part of the offense will be their ground game led by RB’s DeMarco Murray and Mossis Madu. Travis Lewis and Jeremy Beal along with five other starters from last year’s defense will be back making this team extremely talented on both sides of the ball.

Texas A&M - BCS Championship Odds: 100-1

2009- Overall record 6-7               Conference record 3-5              Home 5-2     Away 1-5

Texas A&M 2010 Outlook – Texas A&M’s offensive attack will be led by QB Jerrod Johnson, who threw for 3,579 yards and ran for 509 more. WR’s Uzoma Nwachukwu and Ryan Tannehill will be his two primary targets. Tannehill led the team last year with 609 receiving yards. DE Von Miller should be a force rushing the passer, but the primary concern for the Aggies will be stopping the run.

Baylor – BCS Championship Odds: 100-1

2009- Overall record 3-9               Conference record 2-6               Home 1-6     Away 2-3

Baylor 2010 Outlook – Baylor looks forward to having QB Robert Griffin III back after missing last season with a knee injury. With six additional starters returning, if Griffin is ready to go this offense could be explosive. Last year on defense the Bears gave up an average of 27 points per game which remains a huge cause for concern heading into 2010.
