2009 Record: 5-7 2010 Returning Starters: 17: 7 Offense, 8 Defense, Kicker, Punter
Coach: Rich Ellerson (At Army: 5-7, 1 year)
Offensive Coordinators: Ian Shields Defensive Coordinators: Payam Saadat, Chris Smeland
2010 Army Players to Watch: QB Trent Steelman, FB Jared Hassin, SB Pat Mealy, DE Josh McNary, NG Mike Gann, MLB Stephen Anderson, LB Andrew Rodriguez, S Donovan Travis
2010 Army Strengths:
Army’s defense looked like one of the nation’s best in spurts last season. It didn’t yield a first-half offensive touchdown to Navy or Air Force. Army will get after the quarterback, and McNary is one of the nation’s best pass rushers. All three playmaking linebackers are back. Army’s secondary may be more athletic than last season.
2010 Army Weaknesses:
Can Army’s offense sustain long drives to give its defense a rest? Can it find arunning back with anose for the end zone? Does the roster have aslotback with breakaway speed? Who will step up at wide receiver? Can Steelman, who completed 49.1 percent of his throws last season, excel in a short passing game?
2010 Army Offense:
Trent Steelman, who was the first plebe quarterback in academy history to start every game, is the unquestioned leader. Steelman, who had a teamhigh 706 rushing yards, will be stronger – he added 15 pounds of muscle – faster and smarter running Army’s triple option. The addition of sophomore fullback Jared Hassin should take some pressure off Steelman. Hassin, who sat out last year after transferring from rival Air Force, should open up outside running lanes for senior slotbacks Patrick Mealy and Jameson Carter. Mealy, who saw some time at fullback last season, rushed for a career-high 673 yards and averaged a team-high 6.1 yards for carry. Carter isn’t flashy but he’s a hard-nosed player. Returning receivers caught a combined five passes in 200g. Junior Davyd Brooks has the speed to stretch a defense and the athleticism to make defenders miss. Junior Austin Barr is a good possession receiver and Army’s best blocking wideout. The line returns four senior starters, anchored by center Zach Peterson and right guard Seth Reed. Right tackle Jason Johnson, granted a nfth year of eligibility, has started 22 straight games. Sophomore left guard Frank Allen may be the most talented of the group.
2010 Army Defense:
The unit’s two best players – defensive end Josh McNary (shoulder) and middle linebacker Stephen Anderson (knee) – missed spring practice, but should return at 100 percent. McNary rewrote the academy record book with 12.5 sacks last season, including four against Temple. Undersized, McNary is super quick off the snap, which nullines double teams. Anderson, a two-year starter and the defense’s emotional leader, was playing his best football before blowing out his left knee against Air Force last November. Linebackers are Army’s strength. Andrew Rodriguez, who had a team-high 85 tackles, nts perfectly in Army’s swarming defense and makes big plays. Steve Erzinger is a solid run stopper and aboveaverage in coverage. Senior nose tackle Mike Gann makes Army’s defense tick. Gann’s penetration was a key last season, and he will need to step up his game with the loss of defensive tackle Victor Ugenyi to graduation. The secondary is led by free safety Donovan Travis, who had a team-high four interceptions last season.
2010 Army Special Teams:
Placekicker Alex Carlton tied an academy record with 18 neld goals last season, but he struggled in the spring, leaving the door open for senior Matt Campbell, who was with Army’s baseball team. Punter Jonathan Bulls (39.2-yard average) was inconsistent in ’09. Army needs to improve its return game. Richard King, who might be Army’s fastest player, could make a difference.

2010 Army Predictions:
Optimism has returned to West Point after Army fell one win short of breaking a string of 13 straight losing seasons. The pieces are in place, on both offense and defense, to keep the momentum going, but Army will need a few breaks with a schedule that includes Notre Dame (at Yankee Stadium), Rutgers, Temple and service-academy rivals Navy and Air Force.
