New coordinator Hugh Freeze installed a nohuddle spread offense in the spring with redshirt freshman Phillip Butterfield taking advantage of Ryan Aplin’s shoulder injury to move into the picture at quarterback. Aplin started three games last year, but couldn’t throw in the spring while recovering from surgery, giving Butterfield extra reps. Coach Steve Roberts says he won’t make a decision on the starter until about 10 days before the Sept. 4 opener at Auburn. The Wolves will have new starters at running back and wide receiver. Juniors Derek Lawson (254 yards rushing) and Jermaine Robertson look to split carries in the backfield. Newcomer Dwayne Frampton, a junior college transfer out of Los Angeles Harbor College, could be a key addition at wide receiver. He had T7 catches for 1,230 yards and nine touchdowns last season. Sophomore Taylor Stockemer (16 catches, 347 yards) is the leading returning receiver. Some newcomers arriving in the fall – including running back Frankie Jackson (2.545 yards rushing as a senior at Capitol High in Baton Rouge, La.) and wide receiver Raheim Alford out of Warren, Ark. – could add some pop to the attack. The picture is better up front. All five starters return, headed by All-Sun Belt tackle candidate Derek Newton.

ASU will be counting heavily on newcomers to fill key holes on a unit that led the Sun Belt in scoring and total defense. The signees include Darron Edwards, a cornerback out of Butler Community College in Kansas; Michael Lombardo, a linebacker out of College of the Sequoias in California; Brandon Joiner, a defensive end out of Navarro (Texas) College; and Grant Hill, a high school safety from McGehee, Ark. The key area is up front, where the losses include end Alex Carrington and two other starters. Carrington was the Sun Belt’s Defensive Player ofthe Year as a junior in 2008 and a third-round draft pick of the Buffalo Bills this spring. Tackle Bryan Hall, a second-team all-conference pick last year, returns. Good news is the return of the top four tacklers from 2009. They are linebacker Demario Davis (80 tackles, three sacks); free safety MD. Jennings (64 stops), strong safety Kelcie McCray (58) and linebacker Javon McKinnon (53 in just nine games).
