2010 Arkansas Strengths:
Arkansas has an explosive. versatile offense aiming to run a little more to utilize four good running backs and augment Mallett’s arm and deep receiving corps.

2010 Arkansas Weaknesses:
The defense looks better, but stili must prove it, especially against the big play and especially In the secondary. Special teams, other than kick returner Dennis Johnson, are highly suspect. Freshmen could be handling the punting and place kicking.

2010 Arkansas Offense:

Combine one of the most acknowledged offensive coaching minds in the country with perhaps the best NFL quarterback prospect, and you have an Arkansas offense expected to do great things. Especially since third-year Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino and fourth-year junior quarterback Ryan Mallett have a lot more to work with than just each other. Mallett completed 225 of 403 passes for 3,624 yards last season, with 30 touchdowns and only seven interceptions. From Arkansas’ best-ever passing attack, top wide receivers Joe Adams, Jarius Wright, Greg Childs and Cobi Hamilton all return, as does tight end D.J. Williams, a 2008 Mackey Award semifinalist. The team’s top four running backs – Dennis Johnson, Broderick Green, Ronnie Wingo and Knile Davis – are explosive in different ways. Arkansas’ best offensive lineman of 2009, senior guard Mitch Petrus, has graduated, but the rest of the best of the line returns, plus redshirt freshman guard Alvin Bailey moved ahead of injured senior incumbent Wade Grayson in spring drills.

2010 Arkansas Defense:

The Hogs had 30 takeaways last season, up from just 15 takeaways in 2008. But they gave up too many big plays to suit Petrino and defensive coordinator Willy Robinson. Arkansas will be more efficient – and sometimes spectacular – with junior end Jake Bequette’s pass rush. Arkansas is solid down the line, with veteran Tenarius Wright at the other end and tackles Zach Stadther, Lavunce Askew, Patrick Jones and D.D. Jones nlling the gaps in between. The linebackers are just so-so other than returning leading tackler Jerry Franklin. The defense hit hard enough for Robinson to gamble on speed over size in spring ball’s nnal week. He moved senior starting cornerback Rudell Crim to safety and promoted former nve-star recruit Darius Winston, a sophomore, to nrst-team neld corner. Tramain Thomas is at free safety. He was the Defensive MVP of Arkansas’ Liberty Bowl victory over East Carolina with a 37-yard interception return for a touchdown, plus nine tackles. Other players who figure at safety are Elton Ford and Anthony Leon, a highly touted junior college transfer in 2009. Isaac Madison, a 2008 starter who missed last season with a torn ACL, should help as an extra back against spread offenses and in the regular corner rotation.

2010 Arkansas Special Teams:

Arkansas is special on kick returns with Dennis Johnson averaging 25.8 yards a return in 2009, including a season-opening 91-yard touchdown. But lackluster springs after shaky falls did nothing for senior placekicker Alex Tejada and sophomore punter Dylan Breeding. Incoming freshmen Zach Hocker, a punter/kickoff man, and placekicker Eduardo Camara should challenge immediately.

2010 Arkansas Predictions:

This, by far, appears to be the best team in Petrino’s three years at Arkansas. The offense could soar, but defense and the kicking game still win championships in the SEC. Games 3 and 4 versus Georgia and Alabama, Arkansas’ nrst SEC games, will determine if these Hogs launch a flying start or face their customary Operation Regroup by mid-October.
