2009-2010 Wichita State Season Preview
Gregg Marshall spent his first two seasons at Wichita State just trying to keep the Shockers’ heads above water. His first team lacked depth and fell victim to injuries.
His second didn’t have a player who had played more than one season for the Shockers.
His third figures to challenge for a championship, if not this season, then in 2011. Marshall finally has all the pieces assembled, and the bad news for Valley opponents is all but one of the Shockers will be back after this season.
Guard Clevin Hannah is the lone senior on a team that, in spite of its youth, boasts experience and athleticism. Eight of Wichita State’s Top 10 scorers from last season return, including starters Hannah, Toure’ Murry and J.T. Durley.
They were the leaders of a second-half resurgence that allowed Wichita State to rebound from a 6-11 start and finish 17-17. The Shockers won nine straight home games and posted victories over two NCAA Tournament and two NIT teams.
Murry showed big-time potential, winning two games with 3-point baskets and finishing his freshman season with an 11.0 points per game scoring average. He made another clutch shot in the final seconds of Wichita State’s near-upset of Creighton in the Valley Tournament quarterfinals.
The Shockers tied for the league lead in scoring defense, allowing an average of 62.5 points per game, but Marshall needs to find a way to get more out of a sometimes balky offense – especially when Wichita State plays on the road. The Shockers failed to score more than 60 points in six of their 10 road losses and finished the season ninth in the league in scoring with a 62.9 point average.
