2009-2010 Western Kentucky Season Preview
The 12th-seeded Hilltoppers were on the cusp of reaching their second consecutive Sweet 16 when Gonzaga’s Demetri Goodson hit the game-winning runner with nine-tenths of a second left. In coach Ken McDonald’s first year, the Hilltoppers went undefeated at E.A. Diddle Arena and were regularseason and conference-tournament champions. Senior OrLando Mendez-Valdez won conference Player of the Year after being a reserve point guard the previous two seasons. Second-teamer A.J. Slaughter, the Most Outstanding Player of the conference tournament, is one of four returning starters. Depth figures to be perhaps WKU’s only weakness, and it became even more problematic with the mid-August dismissal of 6-5, 230-pound shooting guard Terrence Boyd (the nation’s 13th ranked small forward according to some scouting services).
