2010-2011 Western Carolina Season Preview
The 2009-10 season was supposed to be the season the Catamounts finally made it back into NCAA Tournament play. However, a semifinal loss to eventual champion Wofford in the SoCon Tournament cast WCU into the Collegeinsiders.com Tournament, where the Cats lost to Marshall in the first round. Coach Larry Hunter will rebuild since six of his top 10 players were seniors. Harouna Mutombo should be a major key in the backcourt to complement Richie Gordon’s post skills. Gordon shot 56.2 percent from the floor while he and Mutombo were the team’s top two rebounders. WCU needs a playmaker to replace Brigham Waginger and also consistent 3-point shooting. The Catamounts shot 36.4 percent from behind the line, but lost their top three trifecta shooters. With 30 years on the bench, Hunter is a savvy veteran who could find a way to land WCU into contention despite its inexperience.
