2010-2011 Washington Season Preview
Frustration is all relative. Eight years ago, when Lorenzo Romar took over at UW, simply getting to the NCAA Tournament was viewed as a major accomplishment. Now, deep into a career that may eventually leave him stamped as the most successful coach in the school’s modern history, fans grumble that the Huskies can’t get past the Sweet 16. UW has been stymied in that round three times since 2005. Romar understands – he’d like to get past the Sweet 16 as well- but also takes it as a compliment for what he’s done at UW. He remains confident the breakthrough is close. While UW loses do-everything swingman Quincy Pondexter, four starters return from last year’s team – which shook off a sluggish start to finish strong and win the Pac-10 Tournament and two NCAA Tournament games – and another stellar recruiting class arrives to make UW the Pac-10 favorite.

Washington Backcourt
The Huskies could have their best and deepest backcourt since the Brandon Roy-Nate Robinson era with the trio of explosive Isaiah Thomas, defensive stalwart Venoy Overton and rapidly improving Justin Holiday. But that’s barely the half of it. Also back is sophomore Abdul Gaddy. He failed to come close to fulfilling the hype engendered by those who rated him behind only John Wall in his point guard class coming out of high school, but Romar still holds out vast hope. There’s also junior swingman Scott Suggs, a dangerous shooter. And the Huskies have a pair of freshmen who should contribute heavily – Terrence Ross and C.J. Wilcox. Ross, who initially committed to Maryland, was one of the most highly recruited guards on the West Coast. Wilcox redshirted last season, but some close to the program said he might have been the best shooter on the team. Washington appears deep enough as to not even really feel the loss of Elston Turner. He had some big games down the stretch, but decided he wanted to be at a school where he could play more than a supporting role. He transferred to Texas A&M.
Washington Frontcourt
UW will have a new look up front after the loss of Quincy Pondexter, who became a firstround pick after a standout senior season in which he finally lived up to his vast potential. The reality, however, is Pondexter often played what was basically a guard position anyway. If the Huskies want to playa more traditional “big” style, they may have more parts this year with the return of senior forward Matthew BryanAmaning, sophomore forward Tyreese Breshers and junior forward Darnell Gant, plus the addition of junior college transfer Aziz N’Diaye. The 7-0, 260-pound N’Diaye might not be a big scorer right away, but the Huskies hope he can provide defense and rebounding.
2010-2011 Washington Predictions
Pondexter, who became UW’s go-to-guy in clutch situations down the stretch, won’t be easily replaced. But UW thought it would miss J on Brockman last season and ended up taking one more step in the NCAA Tournament. UW appears to be the deepest, most experienced and talented team in the conference, with the main question being whether Romar can divvy up the minutes to keep everyone happy. His track record shows he probably will.
