2009-2010 Wake Forest Season Preview

Wake Forest lost two underclassmen to the 2009 NBA Draft, which is bad, but the Deacons’ best NBA prospect came back. And that’s very good.

And that’s why the outlook at Wake Forest isn’t as bleak as it might appear to be, given that sophomores Jeff Teague and James Johnson became the first Deacons duo to be taken together in the first round. That hurts, but the Deacons had a third first-rounder on their team last year. A freshman who is a better future pro than Teague or Johnson.

He’ll be a dominant college sophomore, maybe the best player in the ACC, and he has a nice supporting cast – some of it old, some new. Three starters and 53 percent of the overall offense return from the team that won it’s first 16 games of 2008-09, claimed the No.1 ranking in January and spent 12 weeks in the Top 10. Throw in former starter Ishmael Smith, who came off the bench last season, and the Deacons return players with 237 career starts – third in the ACC.

Wake Forest Backcourt

The Deacons won’t have a show-stopper in their backcourt with second-team All-American Teague gone, but they have three intriguing parts. Smith was eighth in the league in assists and fourth in assist-turnover ratio (1.7-to-l),
and lifted his free-throw percentage from an abysmal 29.1 percent as a sophomore (16- for-55) to 78.9 percent last year (30-for-38).

Four-year starter L.D. Williams has carved our a niche as a physical scorer and defender who earned a spot on the All-ACC Defensive team. And freshman C.J. Harris was a borderline Top-100 player in the recruiting class of 2009 who was seen as an elite point guard by some analysts, and as a fine shooting guard by others. He could back up both Williams and Smith, though junior college transfer Konner Tucker figures into the wing mix as the best pure shooter on the roster.

Wake Forest Frontcourt

The backcourt is average at best, but the Wake Forest frontcourt is excellent – even with the loss of Johnson. It starts with Aminu, who had to fight the burly Johnson and four skyscrapers (Chas McFarland, Tony Woods, David Weaver, Ty Walker) for rebounds and still put up the 13th-best total by an ACC freshman. Aminu’s perimeter shooting has to come a long way from 17.9 percent as a freshman, but inside the arc he shot 57 percent.

McFarland is more than serviceable as a scorer and rebounder, and is fourth among active ACC players with 78 career blocked shots. Woods could be a breakout sophomore waiting to happen, after adding 10 pounds of muscle and enduring the learning curve of the typical ACC freshman big man. Both big men shot better than 52 percent from the floor. So did Weaver, another big body for the Deacons’ endless frontcourt rotation

Freshman Ari Stewart slips neatly into this mix as the missing mid-sized wing – bigger than the Deacons’ biggest guards, not as big as Aminu, but reputed to be as explosive as anyone on the team. He was generally considered among the Top 15 small forwards in his high school class, and he’ll be an added dimension Wake Forest hasn’t had since Josh Howard.

2009-2010 Wake Forest Predictions

Unlike a year ago, the Deacons ought to have modest expectations going for them. Wake Forest has a star in Aminu, two senior guards with almost 150 career starts between them, and four nice post players who are 6-11 or bigger. That’s quality stuff..
