2009-2010 Virginia Commonwealth Season Preview
Change came to VCU in the offseason as Eric Maynor’s outstanding career came to a close, culminating in a first-round selection in the NBA Draft by the Utah Jazz in June. Late March saw coach Anthony Grant leave for Alabama and Shaka Smart take the reins, leaving his assistant’s post at Florida. The Rams should be able to continue their upper echelon status with Larry Sanders as the catalyst in the paint. Sanders shot 51 percent from the floor last season and snared 8.6 rebounds per game, second in the CAA. Joey Rodriguez changed his mind on transferring and will remain a key cog in the backcourt. He and Bradford Burgess score the ball well from the 3-point arc and are valuable playmakers.

This is not exactly the same team that beat Duke in the NCAA Tournament a couple years ago or gave UCLA a run for their money last year, but it is still a talented squad. Sanders can play with just about anybody in the country and if the guys in the backcourt can get adjusted to life without Maynor, this team will battle for the top spot in the conference.
