2009-2010 Villanova Season Preview
Scottie Reynolds had already secured his place in Villanova lore with his buzzerÂbeating drive against Pittsburgh in the Elite Eight to send the Wildcats to the Final Four for the first time since 1985.
But he cemented his hero’s status even more by withdrawing from the June NBA Draft to return for his senior season – and another run at some March magic.
So is everyone else along the Main Line. Without Reynolds, the Wildcats would have been a Top 25 team.
With the 6-2 guard again leading the way – and thanks to a recruiting class ranked No.2 nationally by ESPNU – there’s a buzz about a Final Four return. With a quarter of guards who rank among the nation’s best, Villanova looms as one of the contenders for the Big East title, especially if 6-9 freshman Mouphraou Yarou lives up to expectations. He could be the replacement the Wildcats need for versatile forward star Dame Cunningham.

Villanova Backcourt
Reynolds, who averaged 15.2 points per game in leading Villanova to a school record for victories last year, will assume the backcourt leadership role but will get help doing everything else.
Rising junior stars Corey Fisher and Corey Stokes both return, as does versatile senior Reggie Redding, There’s even more assistance coming with Top 30 consensus recruit Maalik Wayns, arriving from Philly powerhouse Roman Catholic High, where he was a McDonald’s All-American.
Fisher, one of the Big East’s premier point guards, started 11 games last year and spent the summer with the U.S. team in the World University games. Stokes is a dynamic offensive player and a streaky 3-point shooter (41.8 percent last year). He has the ability to take over games.
All Redding did was average 7.1 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.1 assists last year.
Translation: Villanova is loaded at guard. Reynolds’ return simply under scores that assessment.
Villanova Frontcourt
How will Wright replace three key frontcourt players – Cunningham, Dwayne Anderson and Shane Clark? He will start by asking 6-8, 235-pound junior Antonio Pena to do more after he averaged 5.1 points and 4.2 rebounds in 20 starts last year. Pena can expect a significant increase in his playing time average of 17.6 minutes.
He also will rely on 6-6 Duke transfer Taylor King, a former McDonald’s All-American who averaged 5.5 points his only season with the Blue Devils.
Yarou, a Top 15 national recruit, is talented enough to step in and start right away as well.
The wild cards in the frontcourt mix are Dominic Cheek and spindly freshman classmate Isaiah Armwood. Cheek was a McDonald’s All-American but had a sub-par senior year. Armwood needs to do some serious weight room work to add to his 6-8, 180-pound frame.
Reserve help will come from 6-11 Maurice Sutton, who redshirted last season.
But it’s more than just Cunningham’s nightly 16.1 points and 7.5 rebounds that Villanova has to replace. It’s the leadership and the intangibles he provided before becoming the 33rd overall pick in the NBA Draft.
2009-2010 Villanova Predictions
Sure, there is some uncertainty in the frontcourt, but King and Pena are proven commodities at the highest level and Yarou has the chance to be special. So it’s really just nitpicking. With these guards, this is a Top 10 team that can set its sights on a Final Four return. Fisher and Stokes are just beginning to blossom. Redding is big-game tested, and Reynolds is that rarest of all rarities – a star senior guard.
