2010-2011 Vanderbilt Season Preview
The cruel sting of getting upset in the first round of the NCAA Tournament is often used as motivation during the offseason. But if Vanderbilt plans on making it back to the Big Dance, it’ll have to figure out a way to do it without steady point guard Jermaine Beal and skilled center A.J. Ogilvy. The duo led the ‘Dores in scoring and to a second-place finish in the Southeastern Conference East behind Kentucky. Their Vandy careers ended with a heartbreaking loss to Murray State, marking the second time in as many appearances that the NO.4-seeded ‘Dores bowed out to a lower seed in the first round. Losing Ogilvy means the team will be more perimeter-oriented, but it should have enough athleticism to contend for a top spot in the league and beyond.

Vanderbilt Backcourt
With Beal gone, junior Brad Tinsley will be relied upon to direct the team. Though he is a terrific 3-point shooter, he’ll be able to focus on distributing the ball and assume a leadership role. Speedy freshman Kyle Fuller will be Tinsley’s understudy. Stallings thinks Fuller could be the quickest point guard he’s ever had. Shooting guard John Jenkins lived up to the hype that accompanied him as the highest rated recruit to ever end up at Vanderbilt. The former Tennessee Mr. Basketball and Parade All-American was a unanimous selection to the coaches’ All-SEC Freshman Team after shooting 48.3 percent from 3-point range and averaging 11 points per game. But the onus won’t be on Jenkins to carry the offense. Gifted swingman Jeffery Taylor returns after making the All-SEC second team last season.
Vanderbilt Frontcourt
The team’s biggest unknown is how it will fare without Ogilvy, who was a reliable scoring threat and very good at drawing fouls. Vandy will miss his offensive production but should be better defensively without him. Stallings is hopeful 6-11 center Festus Ezeli will make the most of his increased opportunities. He and 6-9 Steve Tchiengang will be counted on to defend the paint and get clean-up buckets. Defensive stopper Andre Walker made a successful return after missing the previous season with a torn ACL and was the second best rebounder on the team. Freshman forward Rod Odom will contend for playing time as well.
2010-2011 Vanderbilt Predictions
Given his team’s depth and improved athleticism, the ‘Dores should be eyeing a return trip to the NCAA Tournament. Vanderbilt Finish in the SEC: 5th in East Division
