2009-2010 Vanderbilt Season Preview
Finding a way to replace 20-point scorer Shan Foster, speedy combo guard Alex Gordon and steady bruiser Ross Neltner was going to be a challenge for the Commodores heading into last season.
Given the turnover of key players and the team’s sudden need to rely on several freshmen, head coach Kevin Stallings figured the Commodores couldn’t afford injuries or mishaps.
But the team got a heavy dose of both ranging from Andre Walker’s torn ACL to Lance Goulbourne missing the first eight games with mononucleosis.
So Vanderbilt finished 19-12 overall and 8-8 in the Southeastern Conference to snap a string of two consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.
With all but one player returning and the addition of prolific scorer John Jenkins, Vanderbilt is poised to make a run at the SEC East title and perhaps return to the Big Dance.

Vanderbilt Backcourt
Jermaine Beal has led the league in assist-to- turnover ratio for the past two seasons. He may not be flashy, but makes smart decisions and is an experienced playmaker who gives a consistent effort.
Brad Tinsley was one of two Vandy freshmen to impress. Tinsley backed up Beal when needed and turned out to be a reliable scoring threat with deep range by shooting a team leading 41.1 percent from behind the arc.
Jenkins will push Tinsley in practice at shooting guard, but Stallings cautioned that it would be unfair to expect too much too soon.
Athletic swingman Jeffery Taylor earned a spot on the SEC’s All-Freshman team because of his ability to create his own shot and rebound. Taylor was third on the team in scoring and second in rebounding and often was spelled by Goulbourne, who scored a career-high 17 points against Kentucky.
Vanderbilt Frontcourt
Led by 6-11 A.J. Ogilvy, Vandy has a deep and talented group of post players. Ogilvy was limited by multiple injuries last season and to prevent that from recurring has focused on improving his conditioning and strength.
Once 6-11 sophomore Festus Ezeli becomes more comfortable in game situations, there are times Stallings may put him and Ogilvy on the floor at the same time.
As a freshman, Steve Tchiengang earned the nod as starting power forward and Stallings expects him to be improved. Backing him up will be junior Darshawn McClellan, an aggressive player who provides energy and rebounding.
The team is counting on the 6-7 Walker being in top form because his ability to guard multiple positions and put up points is needed.
2009-2010 Vanderbilt Predictions
Stallings has an experienced team loaded with size and athleticism that should be good enough to contend with most teams in the SEC.
Ogilvy wasn’t pleased with the way his body broke down or his performance as a whole and is driven to be more productive. He’s also optimistic that his teammates are equally ready to get better. Vanderbilt Finish in the SEC: 4th in East Division
