2010-2011 UTEP Season Preview

While Tony Barbee’s meteoric rise in the coaching ranks takes him to Auburn after only four years in £1 Paso, the Miners have made a curious choice to replace him. Although Tim Floyd has been successful during his collegiate tenure, the recent probation visited upon his former employer by the NCAA could make some wonder why the Miners would take a chance on someone with a checkered past. The reasons are simple. First, Floyd wasn’t directly implicated in the USC scandal, which centered on the recruitment of O.J. Mayo. Second, he has the ability to assemble competitive teams quickly. After UTEP’s success the past couple seasons (49 wins combined in the last two), the school doesn’t want to lose momentum. Finally, he’s a former UTEP assistant who knows the school and its culture. Floyd does have a few challenges – most notably up front, where the Miners will be without a pair of ’09-10 stalwarts, both of whom could still be around. Derrick Caracter, who showed resilience last year after transferring from Louisville, entered the NBA Draft and was a second-round selection of the Lakers. Arnett Moultrie, meanwhile, transferred to Mississippi State, leaving another hole in the frontcourt. That means a pair of holdovers, forward Jeremy Williams and backup pivot Claude Britten, must deliver. Williams showed a diverse game during his first season at UTEP after a junior college stop and should become a stalwart, while asking much more out of Britten, a willing but limited big man, may be hazardous. That’s why the arrivals of Rashanti Harris, Michael Haynes and John Bohannon are so important. Harris is a highly regarded, 6-8, 240pound banger, while Haynes is undersized at 6-6, but can really rebound. The lithe (6-10, 200) Bohannon is more skilled but needs strength. Explosive Randy Culpepper leads the backcourt brigade and can score from almost anywhere. Though just 6-0, he’s one of the nation’s most exciting dunkers. Expect more scoring from Christian Polk, although increased accuracy would be nice, too. Senior wing Julyan Stone is a big-time distributor and defender, and Myron Strong can run the team off the bench. Freshman Desmond Lee has lots of potential but needs time to develop.
