2009-2010 Utah State Season Preview
Another year brings another set of high expectations to Logan, and why not?
The Aggies are experienced, returning four starters who have a combined 186 starts and 239 games played as a group during their USU careers. Even the Aggie reserves have more experience than many of the WAC’s returning starters with 136 collective appearances during their tenure.
USU won a school-record 30 games last season and also has won at least a share of the WAC’s regular-season crown in each of the past three years, taking it outright the past two.

Utah State Backcourt
Utah State’s scoring prowess will continue with senior point guard Jared Quayle, who will look to build upon a standout junior year in which he averaged 13.1 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists. Look for Quayle, a second-team All-WAC and All-Newcomer selection last season, to be relied upon to score even more now. Quayle proved he will be up to the challenge, scoring in double digits in 24 of Utah State’s final 28 games.
The Aggies will miss some of the long range production provided by Stavon Williams, who knocked in 46 3-pointers last season. Not that there is a dire need for perimeter threats, as Quayle and fellow returning starter Tyler Newbold combined to hit 119 treys.
Newbold is another valuable cog in Morrill’s offensive plans. The junior averaged 9.0 points and 4.2 rebounds per game last season and is a constant presence in the starting lineup having been on the floor for the opening tip in 60 straight games.
Jaxon Myaer, the backup point guard, started the first six games last season but was relegated to contributions from the bench the majority of the year. Myaer provided some pop in that role, however, establishing himself as a consistent 3-point threat (23-for-59).
Utah State Frontcourt
Although there are mostly familiar faces back in Logan, there is one big exception.
The Aggies will have to make up for the loss of Gary Wilkinson, the conference’s Player of the Year last season and second leading scorer at 17.1 points per game. The Aggies hope that some of the missing production in the paint will be made up by the addition of Nate Bendall.
The 6-8 JC transfer spent his freshman year with Utah State, went on a church mission and transferred to Salt Lake Community College, where he led the Bruins to the 2009 NJCAA national championship and earned all-tournament honors, too. Bendall averaged 14.4 points and 6.4 boards during his final year with SLCC.
Bendall, who is talented but largely inexperienced, will have some of the defensive attention taken off him by Tai Wesley. The 6-7 junior had a breakout sophomore campaign in which he averaged 12 points and six rebounds per game. His rebounding total was good for 11th best in the conference, while a 59.2 percent success rate from the field was good for second in the WAC.
2009-2010 Utah State Predictions
Bottom line – never bet against the Aggies in the WAC.
Morrill has shown an ability to continue to win despite key roster losses. He entered last season needing to make up for the departure of the most prolific scorer in Utah State history, guard Jaycee Carroll. The Aggies, of course, didn’t miss a beat and enjoyed continued success. Morrill will be asked to do the same after losing Wilkinson.
Another WAC title year in Logan is certainly a possibility with talented scorers in place, not to mention the return of a scoring defense that was tops in the league. Utah State Finish in the WAC: 1st
