2010-2011 Utah Season Preview
Utah will bid farewell to the Mountain West this season, having served as one of the dominant teams through the first decade of the league’s existence. Two months after reaching the 1998 NCAA Tournament title game, Utah joined the move to leave the WAC and start the MWC. The school is headed to the PaC-10 for 2011-12 in football-driven expansion. The Utes stumbled to 14-17 and a No.6 seed in the MWC Tournament last season, but everyone will want to end their series with the Utes on a winning note, getting a shot in at the team headed to greener BCS pastures. The losing record might have been more the result of bad chemistry than subpar talent or coaching. The only scorer in double figures enigmatic guard Carlon Brown – transferred to Colorado before it was announced both schools would land in the PaC-10. Five players left the program, but the only other one with significant playing time was Marshall Henderson, the team’s second-leading scorer. His next stop is Texas Tech. It’s not as ifthe cupboard’s bare for Boylen. Virtually all the height in the small-lineup league is concentrated in Salt Lake City. The Utes have two 7-footers in returning MWC Defensive Player of the Year David Foster and his backup, sophomore Jason Washburn. Foster ranked fourth nationallywith four blocked shots a game, setting a school record along the way – and this is a school that has placed more than its share of post players in the NBA through the years. Foster’s effort was more than what was expected out of a returned missionary. After the backcourt defections, the top returning scorer is senior forward Jay Watkins, who averaged 9.2 points. Boylen will go to Jace Tavita, who started 19 games, and a collection of freshmen and junior college transfers in the backcourt.
