2009-2010 Utah Season Preview
The Utes lose center Luke Nevill from their arsenal, so coach Jim Boylen has some major reconstruction to do down low. Team defense, he said, must be the foundation.
Nevill and the team’s three other top scorers depart, so finding consistent double-digit output will be Boylen’s main task.
Senior guard Luka Orca and junior guard Carlon Brown, who can execute some highlight dunks given a sliver of the lane, figure to set the tone at that end of the court.
Brown scored 9.2 points a game and has the discipline to stay inside the 3-point arc. Drca averaged 7.7, and shot 38.8 percent beyond the 3-point line.
Both are fine distributors, too, with assist-to turnover ratios on the plus side.
Sophomore swingman Jace Tavita, whose second half as a rookie impressed Boylen, will get a chance to shoot, as will Jordan Cyphers, another sophomore swingman.
Jason Washburn, a 7-0 redshirt freshman, gets the first shot to replace Nevill down low.
Boylen likes how Washburn can sink 3-pointers and block shots. Boylen signed a new five-year deal in the offseason and he reinstated printing last names on the back of players’ jerseys. They earned that right, he said, because of the dedication they’ve shown to the program.
