2010-2011 UNLV Season Preview
UNLv’s future couldn’t have been brighter heading into the summer. The Rebels boasted three returning full-time starters and two others with extensive playing time. A combined 83 percent of last season’s scoring was scheduled to return. It all changed in late June when senior guard Tre’Von Willis was jailed and charged with felony domestic battery. His UNLV basketball future was tied to the outcome of the charges, and even then there was no guarantee coach Lon Kruger, or the university, would reinstate him. The Rebels have ample talent returning, including wing Chace Stanback, a former UCLA transfer, guard Oscar Bellfield and his 4.8 assists per game, and inside help from forward/center Brice Massamba. Former Kentucky transfer Derrick Jasper drew 20 starts after a redshirt year. The transfers keep coming. UCLAprovided another Rebel in forward Mike Moser, who will sit out the year, as will Kansas transfer Quintrell Thomas. For the immediate future, Willis was the scoring catalyst for the Rebels and the second-leading returning scorer in the MWC at 17.2 points per game. He swept AlI-MWC first-team, defense and all-tournament honors, averaging 20.3 points in league games. UNLV will still be a contender even if Willis doesn’t play or sits for any length of time. The Rebels frequently have produced the MWC’s most athletic teams along with San Diego State. Only one other part-time starter was lost when junior Matt Shaw failed a drug test at the NCAA Tournament. Those actions represent the only off-court cloud in a program rescued by Kruger. UNLV has three NCAA appearances in the past four years and narrowly missed advancing past Northern Iowa in the first round in 2010. The magic was back in the Thomas & Mack Center, where the Rebels drew an average crowd of 14,228, the best numbers since Jerry Tarkanian’s final season in 1992. UNLV also became one of three MWC teams to finish in the top 22 nationally in home attendance. Las Vegas’ economy might be down, but count on the Rebels to draw the crowds with or without Willis in the lineup. UNLV has another made-forthe- Top 25 RPI schedule with seven non-league dates against NCAA Tournament teams.
