2009-2010 UNLV Season Preview

Practice had just ended on Super Bowl Sunday. The Rebels left the Thomas & Mack Center to watch the big game. Only UNLV coach Lon Kruger and a writer remained in the arena.

In a rare flash of emotion, Kruger, whose team was 17-4, gritted his teeth when talking about the toughness his players needed down the stretch; it was a toughness that had so far eluded them.

The Rebels reflected that flatness in losing seven of their final 11 games, which included a bitter defeat at Kentucky in the first round of the NIT.

Kruger is confident that his returnees learned some valuable lessons after a run of victories in consecutive NCAA Tournaments faded with that NIT exit.

UNLV Backcourt

Two newcomers who witnessed, as redshirts, last season’s poor finish figure to play major roles in the team’s fortunes this season.

At the point, 6-6 junior Derrick Jasper, who left Kentucky, appears to be the Rebels’ rudder. Micro-fracture knee surgery hindered him for two years, and UNLV medical officials stressed patience with his rehabilitation.

Jasper went full-bore, with occasional rest, during summer pick-up games. Insiders say he was explosive and powerful.

Tre’Von Willis and Oscar Bellfield are two returning guards who helped continue Kruger’s blueprint of keeping turnovers to a minimum and distributing the ball efficiently.

As a sophomore, Kendall Wallace returned to his high school shooting style and scored in double digits four times, going 16-for-24 from 3-point range in those games.

UNLV Frontcourt

The other newcomer is Chace Stanback, who helped UCLA get to a Final Four two years ago. He dominated, looking like a right-handed Ed O’Bannon, during practice last season.

What hurt the Rebels, was their lack of power down low. They were the worst rebounding team in the league. By the end of the season, big men Darris Santee and Brice Massamba were spectators.

That can’t be repeated. This time, Carlos Lopez, a 6-11 dervish from nearby Findlay College Prep, who is a veteran of the Puerto Rican junior national system, will press Massamba and Santee.

Moreover, 6-8 junior Matt Shaw, who sat out last season after tearing a knee ligament, is much more accustomed to banging down low after concentrating on that aspect of his game in recent months.

2009-2010 UNLV Predictions

Kruger blames nobody but himself for last season’s fizzle. He hopes he grits his teeth far less frequently this season about his team’s lack of toughness.
