2010-2011 Texas A&M Season Preview
Texas A&M basketball used to be an Aggie joke. But after five straight trips to the NCAA Tournament – the last three under Mark Turgeon – no one is laughing at the Aggies any more. Texas A&M’s streak of NCAA appearances can be matched by only 11 other teams. For historical perspective, consider this: before its current run, Texas A&M had played in the tournament just six times. Extending A&M’s string of 20-win seasons and NCAA appearances this year won’t be easy. Turgeon lost his top scorer, Donald Sloan, and rebounder Bryan Davis. Inspirational leader Derrick Roland, who suffered a gruesome leg injury, lost his appeal to the NCAA for an extra year of eligibility. And tragedy struck the program in the spring when prized recruit Tobi Oyedeji died in a traffic accident after his high school prom. Turgeon is confident some other young players will fill the minutes Oyedeji might have played on the court.

Texas A&M Backcourt
Sloan’s departure leaves the Aggies forced to replace the 17.8 points he scored for a team that often was offensively challenged. Texas A&M finished 11th in the Big 12 in scoring offense and 111th nationally. Turgeon places a premium on solid defense, which offset some of the Aggies’ offensive woes. Texas A&M allowed 64.5 points per game, which put it second in the Big 12 in scoring defense. In conference games, the Aggies allowed a league-low 65.8 points. Turgeon expects senior B.J. Holmes to pick up some of the scoring slack. Holmes averaged 9.3 points per game and led the team with 60 3-point baskets. Junior Dash Harris returns to run the offense. Harris averaged 5.0 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists in his first year as a starter. Texas A&M is 25-3 when Harris records at least three assists in a game, including 15-2 last season.
Texas A&M Frontcourt
Davis capped a productive senior season with a 17-point, 15-rebound performance in an overtime loss to Purdue in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. His departure will mean that A&M will ask more of all its returning inside players in an attempt to develop a more consistent attack. Khris Middleton, Nathan Walkup and David Loubeau each made improvement as the season progressed and bring starting experience to the lineup. Loubeau averaged 9.2 points and shot 53.7 percent from the field, Middleton finished with a 7.2 average and Walkup had a 5.1 average. The trio combined for 54 starts last season. Oyedeji was expected to contribute as a freshman. Now, Turgeon will look to other young players such as Kourtney Roberson, Keith Davis and Daniel Alexander for help.
2010-2011 Texas A&M Predictions
The Aggies have experienced their share of adversity in the past year. They overcame Roland’s injury. Now they must overcome Oyedeji’s death. Texas A&M Finish in the Big 12: 6th
