2009-2010 TCU Season Preview
Losing seasons are commonplace for TCU men’s basketball, an exception to the MWC competitive level of most other Horned Frog programs. A 14-17 record, however, was the first losing campaign in coach Jim Christian’s career.
As one of the hottest mid-major coaching prospects in 2008, he never endured a losing season in six years at Kent State. He opened well enough in MWC play with a surprising 4-1 start, only to go 1-10 down the stretch. It was the perfect setup for a potential shocker in the MWC Tournament … and the Horned Frogs almost delivered, but bowed out to Utah in the final seconds.
Christian promised a more physical defensive squad, and the Horned Frogs showed some improvement on defense, placing third in the league. Despite four players averaging in double figures, the Horned Frogs just couldn’t get it done offensively.
It doesn’t figure to get any easier without second-team All-MWC forward Kevin Langford. But Christian has three starters and three more lettermen returning. He signed only one player last fall – Garlon Green – affording a better opportunity to assess his inherited team and the MWC. Then he announced three signees after June 1, including Virginia Tech transfer Hank Thorns, who will sit out the season.
An international roster preceded Christian to Fort Worth, but he has further extended the boundaries. Croatia, Serbia, Lithuania and Mali (Africa) are represented.
Croatian Zvonko Buljan, the MWC Newcomer of the Year, and early summer additions Cheick Kone and Nikola Cerina should at least get the Frogs on the positive side of rebounding margin. TCU was all about guard play and Langford in the Neil Dougherty era. There’s still plenty of talent at guard, led by sophomore Ronnie Moss.
If the second-year staff can find the right blend, TCU could surprise and jump into the upper division.
