2010-2011 Stanford Season Preview

J ohnny Dawkins knows as well as anyone, and better than most, the formula for coaching success on the major college level. The man who recruited him to – and coached him at – Duke taught him that. Recruiting a highly touted class of players is just one part of the equation. The other part takes place when you actually coach those players. The six players in Stanford’s prep class of 2010 form the deepest and best group of newcomers in the conference. As seemingly boundless as his excitement is about the opportunity to work with his class and see those players improve, Dawkins also knows something else: There isn’t a player among those freshmen who can immediately contribute what New York Knicks’ rookie Landry Fields gave him last season: 22 points and 8.8 rebounds per game, as well as immeasurable leadership and work ethic.

Stanford Backcourt

It’s seems unlikely that any of the newcomers are going to wrest many minutes away from returning starters Jeremy Green and Jarrett Mann, whose overall shooting percentages (40.2 and 38.5, respectively) should improve over their sophomore seasons. But freshmen Aaron Bright (behind Mann at the point) and Anthony Brown (as a shooting guard backing Green but who, at 6-7, could also swing up front) provide much improved depth and in-practice competition for the starters. Brown is likely to draw comparison to Fields based upon their relative size and skill levels. But Brown was more heavily recruited than Fields as a prep senior, turning down scholarship offers from UCLA and Cal.

Stanford Frontcourt

Juniors Jack Trotter and Andrew Zimmerman return in the post positions, but their status as starters seems a bit less secure than it might be for Green and Mann. There are four freshmen frontcourt prospects in the 6-8 to 6-11 range, and each is active and more than reasonably skilled. John Gage and Josh Huestis are fine jump shooters. Dwight Powell and Stefan Nastic (a spring signee; the rest of the class signed last November) attended U.S. prep schools but are from Canada. The 6-10 Powell, who thought long and hard about signing with Harvard, is the most likely of the new frontcourt players to start before Stanford gets too deep into the season. The freshman class is actually seven deep when Andy Brown, sidelined last season following ACL surgery, is added to the mix. Andy (no relation to Anthony) is an exceptional passer from the post or perimeter.

2010-2011 Stanford Predictions

When its ratio of freshmen to seniors is 7-0, it’s easy to say a program might be a year away. But if these frosh can deliver quickly on all of the promise they brought with them, the wait for success might not be nearly as lengthy. Stanford Finish in the PAC-10: 8th
