2009-2010 St. John’s Season Preview

Red Storm? Perfect storm is more like it. In a year when so many of the marquee teams in the Big East need to replace an abundance of key players, St. John’s coach Norm Roberts finds himself sitting with a pat hand. Seven juniors who saw significant time last year return, the recruiting class fills the remaining needs and all-Big East-caliber forward Anthony Mason, Jr. is back from an injury-shortened season.

For St. John’s funs antsy to see some real results, this – finally – could be the year the Red Storm returns as a factor in the Big East.

Roberts isn’t trying to downplay expectations at his success-starved program, once one of the league’s elite, but a recent bottom feeder.

St. John’s Backcourt

Roberts is convinced that having only one pure point guard – junior Malik Boothe – on last year’s roster cost his team a winning season. There’s evidence to support that, with the Red Storm going 2-7 in the nine games Boothe missed after undergoing hand surgery.

Not only is Boothe healthy again, but he now has supporting help with the arrival of promising freshman Malik Stith.

Stith, originally from Long Island, starred last season at Bridgton Academy in Maine.

With that need filled, the backcourt appears set. Junior swingman Paris Horne had a break out season last year, leading the Red Storm in scoring at 14.6 points per game, while averaging 3.4 rebounds. More is expected of sophomore wing Quincy Roberts after he averaged five points and made nine starts.

Roberts added depth, scoring and 3-point shooting with junior college transfer Dwight Hardy and athletic freshman swingman Omari Lawrence.

Hardy averaged 39 points at JFK High School in The Bronx before heading to Indian Hills (Iowa) Community College, where he scored 1,163 points in two years and set school records for 3-pointers attempted and made. He was a third-team JC All-American last year.

St. John’s Frontcourt

Mason had tunnel vision all during his rehab following foot surgery.

The athletic forward was off to a solid three-game start last year before suffering his season-ending injury. He is back and healthy and, for the first time in his career, surrounded by talent.

Junior Sean Evans, a 256-pounder, emerged as an inside force last year, giving the Red Storm something it has lacked for a while. He teams with classmate Justin Burrell to give St. John’s a physical frontcourt presence. Burrell averaged 9.0 points and 4.5 rebounds despite being hampered by injuries.

With Mason joining them, it gives Roberts some options. With 6-10 reserve Dele Coker, junior swingman D.J. Kennedy, part-time starter Rob Thomas and JC transfer Justin Brownlee there’s also depth, scoring and athleticism.

Kennedy was another sophomore who took advantage of the playing time available when Mason was sidelined, averaging 13 points and 6.6 rebounds, while finishing second on the team in assists.

2009-2010 St. John’s Predictions

If not this season, then when? That’s what St. John’s fans are asking these days. Roberts finally appears to have all the pieces in place, from depth to experience to athleticism. There’s also opportunity knocking in the rebuilding Big East. This looks to be a team built for success, and one that should flirt with an NCAA bid. But will looks be deceiving?
