Southern Methodist 2009-2010 Record: 14-17 overall; 7-9 C-USA (Tiel7th)

Southern Methodist Coach: Matt Doherty – At SMU: 53-71, 4years; overall: 151-163, 9years

Southern Methodist Players to Watch: Papa Dia is atough rebounder and productive interior scorer who will almost certainly garner some form of all-conference notice.

Southern Methodist Key Losses: Derek Williams, G, 6-1, 170 (16.6 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 3.7 apg); Mouhammad Faye, F, 6-9, 215 (10.7 ppg, 5.3 rpg); Paul McCoy, G, 5-11, 175 (7.4 ppg, 3.5 rpg)

2010-2011 Southern Methodist Season Preview

When last year ended, the Mustangs could look at themselves with a sense of accomplishment and perhaps even see a future that included postseason contention. Finishing 7-9 in Conference USA isn’t reason for celebration in many camps, but the Mustangs’ flirtation with .500 in league play was an encouraging step, one on which the team hoped to build off of. That’s going to be tough this year because SMU has been hit not only with the losses of players who have exhausted their eligibility but also with the defection of the one player who had defined their quest for respectability. A knee injury knocked Paul McCoy out of the final 10 games last year, and his production had already sagged when he was able to play, but his decision to transfer is a blow. Not only was McCoy the signature recruit of Doherty’s tenure, he was also a stalwart in the backcourt. Losing him and Derek Williams – who averaged 16.6 points per game last year – could derail the Mustangs’ momentum and push them back into the C-USA morass. With McCoy gone, SMU must rely heavily on newcomers and a pair of holdovers with experience but limited production on their resumes. The point spot could well go to 5-10 freshman Jeremiah Samarrippas, who averaged 7.3 points last year. He’s a winner who was named Florida’s SA Player of the Year. Expect senior Rodney Clinkscales, a strong shooter, to see plenty of time at the two, along with classmate Justin Haynes, an inside force who will also swing to small forward. JC import Aliaksei Patsevich, a skilled Belarussian, will also be asked for big contributions, and North Texas transfer Collin Mangrum could help on the wing. Senior Ryan Harp is another option. Even if the backcourt comes around, SMU could have problems up front, thanks to the loss of Mouhammad Faye. Senior Papa Dia is back, and he can score and board inside, while classmate Robert Nyakundi is a good shooter who must rebound more. Strong prospects Leslee Smith, a 6-7, 245pound banger who can also get out and go, and 6-9 Ricmonds Vilde have to contribute immediately.
