2009-2010 Southern Illinois Season Preview
The Valley’s flagship program hit rough waters last season.
Southern Illinois failed to make it to postseason play for the first time since 2001, and the Salukis endured their first losing season in more than a decade, finishing 13-18 and losing five of their last seven games.
Injuries – Southern Illinois ended the season with eight healthy players – and inexperience – of those eight, five were in their first season of college basketball – contributed greatly to the Salukis’ demise.
That youth also is talented, which provides hope for a quick turnaround. Kevin Dillard, Ryan Hare, Justin Bocot and Anthony Booker were among the top first-year players in the league. Dillard was voted the league’s Freshman of the Year after leading the Salukis in scoring, while Bocot was picked for the league’s All-Bench team.
Dillard, Hare and Carlton Fay – who showed signs of developing into a solid frontcourt player – are returning starters. Bocot also got starting experience at the end of the season, filling in after star guard Bryan Mullins went down with an injury.
Finding a replacement for Mullins, a four year starter and two-time Valley Defensive Player of the Year, rates as perhaps Lowery’s top priority. Also gone is Tony Boyle, a former role player who developed into the Salukis’ only real inside scoring threat last season.
The Salukis won 29 games in 2007, the year in which they made their last NCAA appearance. In the two seasons since, Southern Illinois has won a total of 31.
Lowery gets a pass for last season, but a repeat this time around likely would leave Saluki fans – some of the most rabid around – starting to howl.
