2009-2010 South Florida Season Preview

Coach Stan Heath insists South Florida made progress last season but, unfortunately, the Bulls still got smacked around in the rugged Big East.

Yes, there were some bright spots like upsetting then No.8 Marquette – the school’s first victory against a Top 10 team in the program’s history – and they also managed four conference victories, the most in school history.

Regrettably, South Florida suffered through more lows than highs. The 22 losses tied the school record for most in a season, and marked the third time in the past six years the Bulls lost at least 20 games.

The Bulls weren’t exactly straight shooters and finished with the second-lowest shooting percentage in school history (39.9 percent). The Bulls also shot 59.8 percent from the free-throw line, also the second-worst percentage in school history, and 29.7 percent from 3-point range, the worst percentage in 11 years and fourth-worst in school history.

South Florida Backcourt

Junior guard Dominique Jones has proven to be one of the best in the Big East, earning honorable mention league honors for the second consecutive season. He led the Bulls in points (18.1), rebounds (5.6) and steals (1.3). Unfortunately, he often carried the load by himself Chris Howard, whose game picked up during the second half of the season, also returns. Howard is an experienced point guard who improved his outside shot and cut down on his turnovers after an inconsistent first half of the season.

South Florida signed some much needed help for Jones in Shaun Noriega, a 6-4 shooting guard, and Jordan Dumars, a 6-5 shooting guard, and also added Ohio State transfer Anthony Crater, who will be eligible at midseason. Dumars is the son of former Detroit Pistons guard Joe Dumars. Noriega and Dumars could be nice players as incoming freshmen, but it usually takes newcomers a year to adjust to the Big East, and it’s unlikely they’ll be more than merely role players.

Meanwhile, Crater didn’t get off to a favorable start after he was arrested for possession of marijuana. Gaby Belardo didn’t receive a lot of playing time as a freshman and the combo guard transferred to Canisius.

South Florida Frontcourt

Heath has recruited well enough in the backcourt to compete in the Big East on most nights, but the problem is the lack of talent in the frontcourt. That was one of the reasons he had to shake up his coaching staff during the offseason and hire assistants who are more active on the recruiting trail.

Gus Gilchrist, who had an up-and-down freshman season, has the size to play inside, but prefers to roam outside and fire away from beyond the 3-point arc. The Bulls now have enough guards to play on the outside and Gilchrist needs to establish himself in the post.

Justin Leemow (1.6 points) had his moments during his freshman seasons, but if the Bulls need a lot of production from him next season, it won’t be a good sign. The lack of production from the frontcourt could mean immediate playing time for newcomers like Ron Anderson, Jr., a 6-8 power forward, 6-11 center Jarrid Famous and 6-8 forward Toarlyn Fitzpatrick.

2009-2010 South Florida Predictions

If Jones played on a better team, you would hear a lot more about him, but the fact is, South Florida is perhaps headed for another stint in the Big East cellar.

Jones, Howard and the freshmen guards are good, but Heath has to seriously upgrade his talent along the frontline if South Florida is ever going to be competitive in a league as deep as the Big East.

The Bulls were brought to the Big East for their football program. There’s simply no real sign that the basketball team is anywhere near gaining the sort of traction needed to play with the big boys. South Florida Finish in the Big East: 14th
