2010-2011 South Carolina Season Preview
j1Jeason-ending injury to Dominique Archie and the dismissal of Mike olmes after six games left South Carolina with a decimated frontcourt last season. The team still managed to beat four NCAA Tournament teams, including a stunning upset of then No. 1-ranked Kentucky for the school’s first ever victory against a top-ranked team. Heading into his third season with the Gamecocks, Horn will be practically rebuilding from scratch. Five seniors departed, most notably Archie and super point guard Devan Downey, who led the Southeastern Conference with 22.5 points per game. The Gamecocks will have three returning players who played significant minutes – and six freshmen. As Horn continues to put his stamp on the program, the lack of veterans might not be a bad thing. Four of the newcomers are from South Carolina and help comprise one of the most heralded recruiting classes in school history.

South Carolina Backcourt
Downey was a terrific scorer and playmaker who won’t be easily replaced, but Horn is confident in freshmen point guards Bruce Ellington and Eric Smith. The duo has the quickness and athleticism to direct the Gamecocks’ offense. Ellington averaged 28.5 points per game as a junior, and Smith shot more than 50 percent from 3-point range as a senior. Assisting them will be sophomore guard Ramon Galloway, the team’s top returning scoring guard (7.8 ppg), who backed up Downey at times. Galloway averaged 14.5 points in the final four games and Horn believes he could have a breakout year.
South Carolina Frontcourt
The Gamecocks return forward Sam Muldrow, who averaged 10.4 points and 6.2 rebounds and was named to the All-SEC Defensive team. Physical swingman Lakeem Jackson was second on the team in rebounds and steals, giving the Gamecocks a strong utility player. Long and bouncy 6-9 forward J ohndre Jefferson added 15 pounds of muscle, and Nevada transfer Malik Cooke can play either forward spot. The Gamecocks should also benefit from the addition of freshmen Damontre Harris, RJ Slawson and Carlton Geathers. The 6-9 Harris is physically ready to compete in the SEC and will be a shot-blocking force inside. Slawson is more polished and skilled offensively, while Geathers is a 6-10 center who should develop into a contributor over time.
2010-2011 South Carolina Predictions
It will take more time before South Carolina makes a run at an SEC championship, but the architect of the program is pleased with where the Gamecocks are headed. South Carolina Finish in the SEC: 6th in East Division
