2009-2010 South Carolina Season Preview

Darrin Horn didn’t win the Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year award after making his debut at South Carolina.

That honor went to LSU’s Trent Johnson, who was in his first season with the Tigers.

But given the way Horn helped revitalize South Carolina, you could make a case that he was also worthy of the award.

The Gamecocks won seven more games than they did the previous season to finish 21-10 and five more SEC games for a 10-6 record that tied them with Tennessee for first place in the East. The 10 wins marked the best SEC performance for South Carolina since 1998. Horn turned the Gamecocks into an aggressive, 94-feet team, much to the liking of breakneck quick point guard Devan Downey.

Now the Gamecocks lose only one starter and welcome four newcomers giving them depth and experience. That brings no guarantee the team will duplicate its success.

South Carolina Backcourt

Getting Downey back for another year was a huge boost because he is a terrific ball handler, prolific scorer and game-changing playmaker. As a junior, Downey was third in the SEC with 19.8 points per game and third in the league with 4.5 assists per game.

South Carolina will have to find a way to make up for the loss of departed guard Zam Fredrick, who averaged 15.5 points. Shooter Brandis Raley-Ross was named the SEC’s Sixth-man of the Year and could have an increased role in the offense. Evaldas Baniulis made 48 percent of his 3-pointers and Horn hopes he will now expand his game.

The Gamecocks added three freshmen guards – Stephen Spinella, Ramon Galloway and Lakeem Jackson – who should help the team defensively on the perimeter because of their athleticism and size.

Galloway is a combo guard who can distribute or score, Spinella a capable scorer and Jackson a long and strong wing.

South Carolina Frontcourt

Dominique Archie anchors the Gamecocks frontcourt and fits perfectly in Horn’s style because of his energy, length and ability to run the floor. Out of necessity, Archie moved out to the perimeter at times to be a disruptive force defensively, but he should have to do that less now that the team has a few more guards.

Horn is counting on three juniors Mike Holmes, Sam Muldrow and Austin Steed – to be much improved.

Mike Holmes is a back-to-the-basket scorer who is the closest thing the team has to a true post player. Muldrow, a shot blocker, missed 13 games and will need to be more consistent for the Gamecocks, while Steed was a productive reserve.

South Carolina welcomes one new forward to the team in junior college transfer Johndre Jefferson. The 6-9 Jefferson is raw offensively, but is agile, long and will help rebound and block shots.

2009-2010 South Carolina Predictions

Downey is confident that his team will be as competitive as it was last year and potentially even better.

The challenge for the Gamecocks will be staying focused on competing each night in the brutal SEC east, where there are several experienced and loaded teams. South Carolina Finish in the SEC: 3rd in East Division
