2009-2010 Siena Season Preview

One player spent his summer working out for NBA teams. Another was at the LeBron James Skills Academy. By the fall, Siena might be in the Associated Press Top 25 for the first time in program history.

Yeah, things are good in Loudonville, N.Y., these days, where the private college of just 3,000 students is becoming a big name on the college basketball landscape.

The Saints have won first-round NCAA Tournament games in consecutive years, and delivered a scare to No. 1-seeded Louisville before falling, 79-72, in the 2009 second round.

Expectations, too, are on the rise, considering four of five starters return to a team that went 16-2 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play.

Boston College Backcourt

Siena’s only loss to its starting five is a significant one. Kenny Hasbrouck, a 6-3 shooting guard who won the MAAC Player of the Year and league tournament MVP awards, graduated and started his professional career.

His probable replacement is junior Clarence Jackson, an explosive scorer who dropped 28 points against Saint Joseph’s during the 2008-09 season. A solid 3-point shooter who also can take his man off the dribble, Jackson may not end up far off Hasbrouck’s 14.6 points per game.

But the Saints will miss an often underrated aspect of Hasbrouck’s game – his defense. He left as the program’s all-time leader in steals and led the team with 69 during the 2008-09 season.

Jackson will benefit from playing alongside senior point guard Ronald Moore, who led the league with 6.4 assists per game. Moore keys the Saints’ fast-paced offense, which thrives off quick strikes in transition.

Depth will come from the underclassmen – sophomore Kyle Downey as well as freshmen Denzel Yard and Jonathan Breeden. Kyle Griffin, a transfer from La Salle, also is eligible this season and figures to compete for time.

Boston College Frontcourt

The Saints also are experienced up front, where all three starters return.

Edwin Ubiles, a 6-6 swingman, is the flashiest and most-heralded of the bunch, as is evidenced by his appearance at the LeBron James camp this past summer.

Alex Franklin, the starter at power forward, and Ryan Rossiter, the center, are the workhorses. Both should finish among the MAAC’s top five in rebounding and field goal percentage.

Depth is more of a concern in the frontcourt than in the backcourt.

Owen Wignot, a sophomore, may be the first forward off the bench after playing about 10 minutes per game as a freshman. Though he’s more of a wing player, Wignot also stepped in at power forward when needed.

Steven Priestley, a junior who has seen only spot duty his first two seasons, and O.D. Anosike, a freshman, also will be in the mix.

2009-2010 Siena Predictions

The Saints have beaten Stanford, Vanderbilt and Ohio State during the past two seasons. They’ve also been competitive in road games against Pittsburgh and Kansas.

With a non-conference game scheduled against Georgia Tech, Siena will have at least one more chance at another signature win. Expectations are naturally high again, but the Saints are now well-accustomed to the hype – and living up to it. Siena Finish in the Metro Atlantic: 1st
