2009-2010 San Jose State Season Preview
The arrival of Adrian Oliver midway through last season was a pleasant one for coach George Nessman.
The transfer from Washington needed only 18 games to convince those in the WAC he can flat-out play and be a force in the conference. Slowed by injuries after becoming eligible, Oliver didn’t have enough appearances to qualify for league totals, but his 17.1 points a game would have tied him for second with WAC Player of the Year Gary Wilkinson of Utah State.
In Nessman’s previous three seasons, the Spartans captured only 24 victories. He won a little more than half that last season with 13, and a winning record is possible this time around.
The optimism is understandable. Nessman has four returning starters, including twin towers C.J. Webster and Chris Oakes. The formidable forwards now have a shooting guard to pass off to in Oliver if things clog up down low. Those kind of options bode well for Nessman’s schemes.
The big men also provide plenty of second and third opportunities on the boards. Oakes finished second in the league in rebounding last year at 7.6 a game, while Webster was eighth at 6.5.
Add point guard Justin Graham to the starting mix and it’s likely the Spartans will improve on last year’s 6-10 WAC finish. Graham was second in the conference in assists and has plenty of options at his disposal.
The lone drawback is that San Jose State is depth-challenged. Like a lot of WAC teams, the Spartans are good at the top, but falloff rapidly after that. Nessman signed a half-dozen newcomers in the offseason, including JC transfer Moses Omolade, who adds size, quickness and shot-blocking ability down low.
Contending for the title may prove too challenging, but those who take now-experienced San Jose State lightly could pay dearly.
