2009-2010 San Diego State Season Preview
The Aztecs fielded one of their best teams last season but were denied a chance to win the program’s first game in the NCAA Tournament.
Contending for the regular-season league crown and reaching the final of the conference tournament did not impress the NCAA selection committee, so SDSU was relegated to the NIT.
The Aztecs did make the most of their NIT experience by getting to Madison Square Garden. They lost their first game, to Baylor in the semis, in the famed building, but now they know about the big stage.
Coach Steve Fisher loses about 43 points and 15 rebounds from his four main departures Lorrenzo Wade, Kyle Spain, Richie Williams and Ryan Amoroso.
At the foundation of the new-look Aztecs is junior forward Billy White, a lefty who led the league shooting 66.3 percent last season. He made 22 baskets in a row during one stretch.
Tim Shelton, son of former NBA banger Lonnie Shelton, had a fine debut season. He had 17 points and 10 rebounds against St. Mary’s and the Aztecs went 13-3 when he started.
Mehdi Cheriet, a senior from France who tallied 14 points against BYU, will be called on to bolster the Aztecs around the basket.
In the backcourt, D.J. Gay is the incumbent who replaces Williams. SDSU was 10-0 when Gay scored at least 10 points last season. He also has the experience, having started most of his first two seasons.
A sterling recruiting class, considered among the Top 15 by several national recruiting services, is highlighted by Kawhi Leonard, the Los Angeles Times Player of the Year from Riverside, Calif.
Chase Tapley, Malcolm Thomas, Eric Lawton and Alec Williams, as well as Leonard, all averaged at least 20 points a game for their respective teams last season.
