Saint Mary’s Gaels vs Baylor Bears Preview, Odds & Prediction

The Bears success can be attributed to a much-improved 2-3-zone defense fueled by center Ekpe Udoh who set a Big 12 record with 124 blocked shots. Udoh can also influence games on the offensive glass with his rebounding abilities. Baylor is led by guards Tweety Carter and LaceDarius Dunn, both who have shown their ability to be crucial playmakers as well as being capable of producing plenty of outside firepower if the two get hot at the same time. Occasionally, the Bears need to find additional output besides Dunn and Carter. If the rest of the bench can provide enough steam to contribute 50 percent of the scoring contribution, Baylor is going to be a tough out as long as Dunn and Carter remain hot and forward Ekpe Udoh is an imposing presence on both ends.

St. Mary’s keeps getting better as the season progresses, mainly because of their defense. At the core of that defense is center Omar Samhan. Samhan provides dominant low-post play and has been the team’s best player ithis far in the postseason. He will be assisted by all-conference guard Mickey McConnell, who is just one of four Gaels’ starters that are excellent three-point shooters. St. Mary’s must keep shooting well from 3-point range, if they are going to match up against a bigger Baylor squad. If the Bears’ defense starts collapsing on Samhan, those perimeter players will get open looks. Defensively the Gaels will need to contain Baylor’s high-scoring guard LaceDarius Dunn, and Matthew Dellavedova will probably get that assignment. Samhan will match up against Bears 7-footer, Josh Lomers, who until recently hasn’t been all that impressive.

The odds makers have the Bears as -3 ½ -point favorites.

Expect Baylor to struggle falling to the Gaels by two points with a late bucket.
