2009-2010 Saint Louis Season Preview

How do you replace talents like Kevin Lisch and Tommie Liddell – two players who helped Saint Louis remain competitive in the Atlantic 10 – without going into total rebuilding mode? Coach Rick Majerus is about to find out.

Saint Louis will be extremely young without a senior on its roster and only one junior, Paul Eckerle, who started just one game and averaged less than two points.

Lisch and Liddell led the ream in scoring and tutored a talented group of freshmen, including point guard Kwamain Mitchell and center Willie Reed.

Majerus regularly started three freshmen so they all got valuable game experience.

Reed and Mitchell should be much improved and are considered the leaders. Mitchell, who was selected to the A-10′s All-Freshman squad, is the leading returning scorer at 11 points per game. He also led the Billikens with 113 assists. Reed has the promise to be a dynamic post player but needs to get stronger. At 6-6, sophomore Brian Conklin was an undersized power forward who still managed to average 6.1 points and 3.9 rebounds while starting 29 games. Kyle Cassity will challenge for more minutes.

Majerus recruited several Australian players when he coached at Utah, including Andrew Bogut, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 NBA Draft. Majerus went down under again to get 6-8 Cody Ellis and 6-4 shooting guard Christian Salecich. Ellis will contend to be the starting power forward, while Salecich is an outstanding 3-point shooter.

In addition to the Aussies, Majerus added 6-8 power forward Cory Rernekun, athletic and wiry 6-7 forward Jon Smith (a good defender and rebounder), as well as 6-5 shooting guard Jeff Reid.
