2010-2011 Rice Season Preview
It can’t be good news for Owls coach Ben Braun that there has been a change atop the school’s athletic hierarchy. Not only didn’t new AD Rick Greenspan hire the third-year coach, but Braun also has an 18-45 record and has made little progress in a conference that has provided opportunity for growth now that John Calipari has left Memphis. The challenge for Braun is not to craft a title contender but to develop a team that has the ability to survive the rigors of C-USA’s travel and disparate crop of rivals. It is certainly tough to do that at a private, highly respected academic institution, especially when many of its opponents have the ability to recruit anybody. But Braun understood the limitations when he took the job, and if he doesn’t get to .500 this year, it won’t be surprising if Greenspan starts thinking about installing his own man. It is good, then, that Braun has a solid crop of returnees and a .few newcomers capable of contributing right away. Add in the surprisingly magnanimous decision by the NCAA to grant guard Cory Pflieger a sixth year of eligibility, and Rice enters the season with its best chance to compete during Braun’s tenure. Sophomore point guard Tamir Jackson has the potential to be pretty good, provided he can cut back on turnovers and shoot better. If Pflieger’s knee, which kept him out of last season, is all right, he’ll provide some pop from the outside. If he can’t, it’s up to sharpshooter Connor Frizzelle. Sophomore A.J. Holland showed potential as a backup point last year, and 5-8 freshman Trev Abraham is talented, albeit frenetic at times. Up front, the Owls look for even bigger things from sophomore Arsalan Kazemi, who made people stop talking about his Iranian lineage and start noticing his interior production. Steady vet Trey Stanton joins Suleiman Braimoh and 6-8 sniper Lucas Kuipers’ in a frontcourt supporting cast that needs to produce more. Meanwhile, 6-9 freshman David Chadwick should provide help on the boards, and 7-1 Egyptian Omar araby plays pretty good interior D but may redshirt.
