2010-2011 Rhode Island Season Preview

The years change, players leave and Jim Baron keeps on winning a load of games at Rhode Island. That, in a nutshell, is what has gone on with the Rams over the past four seasons. The Rams won 26 games last season, good for the fourth consecutive year with 19 or more victories. The season ended with a thrilling but painful loss in the NIT semifinals to North Carolina. But after again missing the NCAAs, the desire for even more winning is strong in Kingston. URI has won more games (89) in the past four years than at any time in program history and there will be more this season. The Rams lose two key seniors in Keith Cothran and Lamonte Ulmer, but return eight of their top 10 players with senior forward Delroy James the key piece. James can put up points in a hurry and may be as skilled as any forward in the Atlantic 10. He averaged 13.2 points as a junior and put up 19.2 per game in the NIT, including a 34-point explosion against Nevada. The other returning starter up front is junior center Will Martell, a 7-footer who has matured into one of the steadiest centers in the conference. Martell still needs to better avoid foul woes, but he shoots nearly 60 percent from the field, is a tough defender and rebounds in bushels. Another key answer up front could be Orion Outerbridge, a 6-g junior who is an electric shot blocker. A steady point guard tandem returns with senior Marquis Jones and junior Stevie Mejia at the controls. Sophomore Akeem Richmond will start at the off-guard spot and be one of the Atlantic 10′S premier 3-point snipers after setting a school freshman record for 3-pointers with 81. Ben Eaves and Jamal Wilson are also back to lead a veteran bench and Baron is hoping freshman Levan Shengelia can beef up the team’s inside defense while wing recruit Tashawn Mabry comes to campus after a record-setting prep career in North Carolina. Baron has it rolling in Rhode Island, and the hope is this is the year for an NCAA return.
