2009-2010 Rhode Island Season Preview

After a few years of running in place, Jim Baron’s Rams are again moving in fast-forward.

The reigning Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year won his fourth award mainly because the Rams ran and ran, and ran some more. That added up to a league-leading 79.3 points per game­ good for 10th in the country – and helped the Rams win 23 games and advance to the second round of the NIT.

Look for more of the same this season, but the challenge will become stiffer without the program’s all-time best 3-point shooter, Jimmy Baron. The coach’s son was in range as soon as he crossed midcourt and that outside pop will be sorely missed. So will the lane play of big forward Kahiem Seawright. In their absence, Baron will simply push the pedal to the metal even more.

The Rams welcome back the core of an exciting offensive team. Two veteran point guards (Marquis Jones, Stevie Mejia) will run the show and look for established scorers in wing guard Keith Cothran and athletic forwards Delroy James and Lamonte Ulmer. Cothran and James have the potential to blossom as seniors and need only to add consistency to be major forces.

Finding some punch around that core is vital. but there are several candidates.

Baron likes the scoring skills of freshman guard Akeem Richmond, and forward Ben Eaves could pick up some of the 3-point shooting slack from the loss of Jimmy Baron. Finding some strong defense/ rebounding in the lane is vital if the Rams are going to improve on soft defensive numbers that allowed opponents to score more than 72 points a game on 45-percent shooting.

Will Martell, a much-improved 7-0 junior, returns and little-used sophomore Orion Outerbridge and possibly freshman Ryan Brooks should be able to help up front.
