2009-2010 Purdue Season Preview
Depending on your perspective, Purdue either continued to climb the national ladder or fell a little short last season.
Despite retaining all five starters and beginning the season in the coaches’ Top 10, the Boilermakers won just two more games than the year before, improved just one line on their NCAA seed (from 6 to 5) and advanced just one round further in the NCAA Tournament.
But when one considers Robbie Hummel, predicted to be the Big Ten’s top player, struggled with a fractured vertebrae for much of the conference slate and veteran guards Chris Kramer and Keaton Grant weren’t exactly 100 percent most of the season, the Boilers did well to earn 27 wins and reach the Sweet 16.
The Boilers retain their top six players, so ‘good position’ means something that gives them a realistic chance to reach the Final Four in Indianapolis.

Purdue Backcourt
Purdue boasts one of the nation’s deepest and most experienced guard corps.
Explosive junior E’Twaun Moore paced the Boilers in points and minutes in each of his first two years, both of which led to second-team All-Big Ten honors.
Seniors Kramer and Grant have combined for 150 starts and 5,337 minutes during their careers. Kramer now guns for his fourth consecutive appearance on the Big Ten’s All Defensive team, while Painter expects Grant to revert to his sophomore form. Grant sat out five months last summer following knee surgery and never quite hit stride.
Grant switched to the sixth-man in order to accommodate blurry point guard Lewis Jackson, who led the Boilers in assists and enjoyed stretches where defenders couldn’t stay in front of him.
As if four guards weren’t enough, the Boilers boast four more that’ll make their presence known eventually. Sophomore shooter Ryne Smith played rarely last year, but Painter loves his offseason improvement and effortless range.
Freshmen D.J. Byrd and Kelsey Barlow could play roles on the wing as they learn the Purdue system from the vets. Redshirt freshman John Hare, viewed as a natural scorer, gained strength during his year off and could crack the rotation.
Purdue Frontcourt
Purdue sent two players to USA Basketball’s World University Games tryouts during the summer. Hummel, blessed with a pain-free back, made the squad and contributed 7.3 points and 5.6 rebounds to the bronze-medal effort. Center JaJuan Johnson, on the other hand, ran into stiff competition and didn’t make the cut – a bit of a slap to the All-Big Ten first-team pick.
The Boilers graduated their top two frontcourt backups, so freshmen Patrick Bade and Sandi Marcius are going to have to learn the ropes early. Bade is a powerful forward who had football offers to play tight end, while Marcius owns back-to-the-basket skills.
2009-2010 Purdue Predictions
There are no small goals in West Lafayette this winter – unless one counts the short trip south on I-65 to get to the Final Four.
