2009-2010 Providence Season Preview
After watching a steady diet of Jonny Flynn, Dejuan Blair and Hasheem Thabeet all season, Keno Davis knows he could’ve picked an easier season to step into the Big East.
That trio is gone and the Big East’s star power is slightly dimmed, but the Providence coach will now face even greater tests.
Davis inherited a veteran team that was a factor all year in perhaps the Big East’s most difficult season ever. The Friars knocked off Syracuse, top-ranked Pittsburgh and finished in the upper half of the 15-team monster. That’s what you call terrible timing, because most other years the Friars would probably have been an NCAA Tourney shoo-in. Instead, five now-departed seniors led PC into the NIT and the Friars will start over with only three players who played complementary roles to that core.

Providence Backcourt
The Friars have some veteran answers at guard. In fact, they think they have one of the best guards around in fifth-year senior Sharaud Curry. The Georgia native returned from a broken foot last season and clearly wasn’t himself until the Big East schedule kicked in. He was the catalyst of an offense that could score on most anybody and is clearly capable of putting up more than 11.7 points a game. Davis will free him to do so thanks to an infusion of help at point guard that will allow Curry to move off the ball and fire away from the wings.
The point guard depth will come from freshmen Johnnie Lacy and Vincent Council, both of whom like to push the ball and play at the faster pace Davis wants. If they can play, Curry will see some time at the wing where he’ll be joined by junior Marshon Brooks and senior Brian McKenzie. Brooks showed he can put up points in a hurry by averaging 10 points in 21 minutes and if anyone in the program is destined for stardom, the long, active Atlanta native is it. McKenzie struggled with his shot last year but could rebound and make a big impact as a senior.
Also watch out for newcomers Kyle Wright and Duke Mondy. Wright is a strong, smart shooter who’ll play if his reputation as a 3-point bomber holds. Mondy is a sleeper freshman from Michigan.
Providence Frontcourt
This is where the questions arise. Geoff McDermott, Randall Hanke and Jonathan Kale grabbed most of the rebounds and guarded all of the big men in 2009. Who’ll take over for them is a major question mark.
At times last year, redshirt forwards Jamine ‘Greedy’ Peterson and Bilal Dixon had their way with the outgoing seniors in practice. Peterson is a bouncy forward who worked on his shot a bit and can play anywhere along the frontline. Dixon’s freshman year was spent getting stronger and expanding his impressive skill set.
Davis adds three big men to the mix in JC forward Russ Permenter and freshmen James Still and Kadeem Batts. The Friars hope Permenter’s experience pays off right away.
2009-2010 Providence Predictions
While the rest of the conference expects the Friars to take a major step back, Davis isn’t so sure. He thinks this team will be more athletic, play at a faster pace and be much deeper than his first. Elevating Curry and/or Brooks to star status is a must, and they’ll clearly have the chance to shine.
If last year’s team played in this Big East, expectations would be high. But with this team in this Big East, the Friars are going to have to overachieve to get back to the NIT. Providence Finish in the Big East: 15th
Providence Projected Post-season Tournament: CBI/CIT
