2009-2010 Oregon State Season Preview
It didn’t take long for Craig Robinson to make a name for himself as something other than being the brother-in-law to Barack Obama.
While the first-year OSU coach was happy to talk about his family, by March the questions were as often about the surprising Beavers, whom Robinson led to one of the greatest turn around’s in Pac-10 history.
After going 0-18 the previous year, Robinson led OSU to a 7-11 conference mark. That improvement and Robinson’s name helped OSU land a spot in the College Basketball Invitational despite a 13-17 record. Once there, Oregon State proved it belonged, winning the whole thing by taking the final game of the best of three championship series at UTEP.
Now, with all but one key player back and the arrival a five-man recruiting class that is one of the best in recent school history, the expectations are the highest in Corvallis in two decades.

Oregon State Backcourt
OSU’s only significant loss is point guard Rickey Claitt, the hero of the CBI series win. But everyone else is back, including the Tarver brothers – swingman Seth and more traditional guard Josh – each starters throughout the CBI.
The 6-5 Seth Tarver ended the season as OSU’s leading rebounder and was regarded as the team’s best defender in Robinson’s 1-3-1 zone that caused opponents about as many fits as did the more celebrated high post offense, reminiscent of the famed Princeton set. Claitt’s departure could open a starting spot for junior Calvin Haynes, who was the team’s sixth-man most of the season and leading scorer at 13 per game. Haynes was the player last season who seemed most capable of scoring outside of the high-post offense.
Josh Tarver is the best candidate to fill Claitt’s playmaking role, but the Beavers also are excited about true freshman point guard Jared Cunningham, who originally committed to Arizona State.
Junior Lathen Wallace returns at the shooting guard spot. After not starting much of the season, he started all six games of the CBI and shot 43.6 percent on 3-pointers.
Robinson should have more shooters to throw at teams this year with the addition of 6-7 Australian Rhys Murphy and 6-4 Roberto Nelson.
Three-point shooting, vital in Robinson’s offense, was one of OSU’s weaknesses at times last season. But the freshmen additions and added experience could mean vast improvement.
Oregon State Frontcourt
Robinson’s high post offense gives the Beavers’ frontcourt a different look than most. The team’s biggest player is 6-11 senior forward/center Roeland Schaftenaar. His passing skills proved a perfect fit for Robinson’s offense, and he led the team in assists with 120 while also scoring 10.5 per game. The Beavers often started what were essentially four guards surrounding Schaftenaar.
Two incoming frosh fit the good passing big man mold, as well – 6-7 Joe Burton and 6-10 Angus Brandt, also of Australia.
OSU’s two most conventional big men 6- 9 Omari Johnson and 6-8 Daniel Deane, each juniors – saw their playing time decrease as the season wore on and may have to fight for minutes this season.
2009-2010 Oregon State Predictions
In just one year Robinson completely changed the direction of a program that has had just one winning season since Gary Payton left in 1990. His offense and defense give his fellow Pac-10 coaches nightmares and his team an identity. His discipline enforced via early morning practices, among other acts – reined in a program that had run amok the previous year.
The players bought in, got better, and were rewarded with the run to the CBI title. With all but Claitt returning – and if the recruiting class is as good as advertised the Beavers could make a legitimate run for a top-five conference finish and a more traditional postseason berth.
