2010-2011 Oregon Season Preview
It would be hard to have much more of a total makeover than the Oregon Ducks will experience this season. First is the transition from coach Ernie Kent – whose 235 wins in 13 seasons were the most in school history – to Dana Altman, finally hired away from Creighton after a 41-day search. While Kent had some great seasons – twice leading Oregon to the Elite Eight – many in Eugene felt the team needed a firmer hand, especially after losing seasons in the past two years. They should get it with Altman, lauded for his floor-coaching ability. Altman will barely get his feet wet before the Ducks move into a new $227 million arena, set to open in January, closing the door on venerable Mac Court, Oregon’s home since 1927. Altman, who had long resisted moving from Creighton, was lured by the combination of a new arena and a program that has had recent success (plus potential).

Oregon Backcourt
Altman says he wants to continue to play uptempo, though probably with a little more structure than the team was used to under Kent. Back to run the point is junior Malcolm Armstead, who was third in the Pac-10 in assists last season at 4.3 per game, though the Ducks might go with a committee approach. Altman’s first signee was 5-9 Johnathan Loyd of Las Vegas, who also figures to get time running the point. Junior Teondre Williams likely mans the other guard spot, and he will need to pick up his scoring to replace the graduated Tajuan Porter. Oregon also has some experience off the bench in junior Garrett Sim, who has been sporadic but could be ready for a breakout, and senior swingman LeKendric Longmire, an athletic slasher. One of the biggest concerns is finding someone to shoot the ball. The Ducks were ninth in the Pac-10 a year ago at 43 percent and lose Porter, their best long-range shooter.
Oregon Frontcourt
If all the pieces come together, Oregon could be dangerous here. Junior center Michael Dunigan sometimes looked like the best player on the court as a sophomore, but he disappeared at other times – he was benched for the final eight games of the season. But few question that he has all-conference potential. He flashed that ability when he was named PaC-10 Player of the Week after Oregon opened the conference season with a road sweep of the Washingtori schools. Sophomore E.J. Singler – younger brother of Duke’s Kyle – returns at small forward, and junior Jeremy Jacob is back at power forward. Altman also brought in junior college transfer Tyrone Nared – whose forte is rebounding more than scoring – to add depth. A wildcard is senior J oevan Catron, who was granted a fifth year after missing all but four games last year due to back trouble. He averaged 5.8 rebounds in just 21.3 minutes per game when he did play last season.
2010-2011 Oregon Predictions
Oregon’s laborious coaching search drew smirks throughout college basketball, but the Ducks might have landed the right guy in Altman. Oregon isn’t deep – the Ducks have just nine scholarship players. But there’s talent here – Dunigan was a McDonald’s AllAmerican in 2008 – and while not much will be expected, it’s not hard to envision Oregon pulling some surprises. Oregon Finish in the PAC-10: 10th
