2009-2010 Oregon Season Preview

At least Oregon has history on its side. The last two times the Ducks had records of .500 or below, they rebounded the following year to advance to the Elite Eight.

Few will pick that for the Ducks this season, but there are lots of reasons to assume a better record than last season’s 8-23 debacle, and possibly postseason play of some sort. All five starters return, and Oregon has another solid recruiting class.

The fate of coach Ernie Kent – now the dean of the Pac-I 0 – may depend on a significant turnaround. He was left hanging for a few weeks after last season before it was announced he would be back.

But that came only after Kent agreed to shake up his coaching staff and hire Mike Dunlap as an associate head coach. Dunlap, most recently associate head coach at Arizona, led Metro State to two Division II national titles as a head coach and was given a two-year contract with the Ducks worth $400,000 annually.

Dunlap, as he did at Arizona under interim Russ Pennell last season, figures to have a heavy say in what the Ducks do on the floor in a critical year for Kent, with Oregon set to move into a new arena for the 2010-11 season.

Oregon Backcourt

The Ducks could have one of the most explosive backcourts in the Pac-10 with Tajuan Porter back for his final year, swingman LeKendric Longmire maturing into a solid player, and several other youngsters who might be ripe for a breakout.

Porter was the star of Oregon’s Elite Eight run as a freshman and can still score at will, although his shot selection and playmaking need some work. Sophomore Garrett Sim earned a starting nod alongside Porter last season when former point guard of the future Kamyron Brown struggled; Brown decided to transfer after the season. Oregon signed JC transfer Malcolm Armstead to provide another option at point guard.

The rangy Longmire, who was one of Oregon’s most improved players last season as a sophomore, should post double-digit scoring this year.

Sophomore shooting guards Teondre Williams and Matt Humphrey didn’t do much last season, but each has the size and high school press clippings to suggest there’s a lot more there.

Oregon Frontcourt

Oregon could be massively improved up front if sophomore Michael Dunigan makes the expected improvement from freshman to sophomore seasons, Joevan Catron plays like a senior, and highly touted recruit Jamil Wilson is as advertised.

Dunigan was the gem of the 2008 class and, with a year under his belt, could become one of the best low-post threats in the conference this season.

The 6-7 Wilson, of Racine, Wis., generally considered a Top 50 recruit and among the best small forward prospects in the country, gave Kent a boost by signing with Oregon late. He’s also a good outside shooter, and his skills seem a perfect fit for the breakneck Oregon offense.

The bull-like 6-6 Catron is more of a lowpost player.

The Ducks also have high hopes for two Oregon natives – sophomore Drew Wuey and incoming freshman E.J. Singler, the younger brother of Duke’s Kyle Singler. Wiley got a lot of regular minutes late in the season and showed a good outside shooting touch. Singler should help both with shooting and rebounding.

Also possible factors up front are 6-8, 260- pound sophomore Josh Crittle and junior college transfer power forward Jeremy Jacob.

2009-2010 Oregon Predictions

A lot of it is young, but the talent seems there for the Ducks to make a big leap in the win column and again save Kent’s job. After a couple of early non-conference wins that seemed to indicate there was some ability, the Ducks seemed to go through the motions during most of the Pac-10 slate, losing 12 games by 10 points or more.

Kent’s been here before, building young teams into exciting winners. But Dunlap’s hire seems to only add to the urgency for Kent to show significant improvement this season. Oregon Finish in the PAC-10: 6th
