2009-2010 Oklahoma State Season Preview

Oklahoma State, which had a strong finish to Travis Ford’s first year at the helm in Stillwater, will look to build on that momentum in 2009-10.

The Cowboys went through some rough patches last season as their postseason hopes were on the rocks midway through the conference campaign. But OSU had a good showing late, and, as a No.8 seed in the NCAA Tournament, knocked off Tennessee and nearly upset top-seeded Pittsburgh.

This year OSU welcomes a recruiting class ranked in several Top 10s, and Ford returns a strong crop of players, including James Anderson, who should be one of the best players in the Big 12.

In Year two also look for Ford to institute more of his fast-paced style.

Oklahoma State Backcourt

The first and foremost concern in Stillwater is finding a new point guard for Ford’s ball-screen heavy, up-tempo offense.

Ford has one in-house candidate for the job in Keiton Page, but the sophomore struggled with ball-handling responsibilities as Eaton’s backup last season and, as a prolific 3-point shooter, is better playing off the ball.

Ford also signed three – yes, three – freshmen point guards. Reger Dowell of Duncanville, Texas, Fred Gulley of Fayetteville, Ark., and Ray Penn of Houston will battle for the position throughout the preseason. Penn, the most highly rated recruit of the three, had shoulder surgery over the summer.

OSU’s other key loss is shooting guard Terrel Harris, but the guard-heavy Cowboys are more prepared to replace him. Anderson, a prolific 3-point shooter whose versatility has increased dramatically in the past year, can play the two through four Spots in Ford’s offense. Both Anderson and 6-5 senior guard Obi Muonelo played the four spot at times last season.

Oklahoma State Frontcourt

Junior Marshall Moses may have been the most improved player in the Big 12 last season, going from OSU’s fourth-string center at Christmas to its starter and a regular double-double producer in March.

But the undersized big man – he is listed at 6-6 – could use some help, and that was one of Ford’s priorities in recruiting.

The key addition came in July, when Ford got a commitment from Kentucky transfer Matt Pilgrim, a 6-8 big man who could be an instant impact player for OSU if the NCAA allows him to play this season. That was good news after prized recruit Karron Johnson failed to qualify.

Freshman forward Roger Franklin, who is probably more of an in-between player at 6-5, is highly regarded and should contribute.

Freshman Torin Walker, a 6-11 center, also could contribute as a freshman, while 6-10 Jarred Shaw is expected to be more of a project than immediate impact player.

Sophomore Teeng Akol did not contribute last season after gaining eligibility in January, but Ford said the 6-11 Sudanese player is much-improved.

2009-2010 Oklahoma State Predictions

As the first non-Sutton coach in nearly 20 years, Ford got off to a somewhat rocky start in Stillwater. But by March the Cowboys were winning and the OSU fans were on board and back to filling Gallagher-Iba Arena.

With more of ‘his’ players on the roster, can the Cowboys make it to back-co-back NCAA Tournaments? With more depth and speed, will Ford be able to install more of his up-tempo style? And who will play the point for the former Kentucky point?

These are the big questions to be answered in Stillwater this season. Oklahoma State Finish in the Big 12: 5th
