2009-2010 Notre Dame Season Preview

The more Luke Harangody thought about whether to leave for the NBA Draft or return for his senior year, the more he kept coming back to the same two things.

He loves college but hated the way last season went for the Irish.

His decision to opt for another winter in South Bend means Notre Dame can think NCAA Tournament thoughts again instead of worrying about scuffling around in the lower reaches of the Big East.

Though the 6-8, 255-pounder led the conference in scoring (23.3) and was second in rebounding (11.8), Notre Dame’s once-promising 14-3 start fizzled into an NIT season.

Even the NIT would have been a reach this year without Harangody, a doubledouble machine.

The Irish lose three starters, but return point guard Tory Jackson and will add Mississippi State transfer Ben Hansbrough to the backcourt and Purdue transfer Scott Martin to the frontcourt.

Notre Dame Backcourt

Kyle McAlarney’s 3-point shooting and scoring ability will be missed, but Brey can fill that void while adding toughness and not losing much in the way of experience now that Hansbrough is eligible.

The younger brother of Tyler Hansbrough averaged 10.5 points as a sophomore with the Bulldogs. His work ethic and physical style could be just what the Irish need – and offer a nice contrast to Jackson, the speedy and talented point guard.

Hansbrough’s 3-point shooting is also a nice fit for Notre Dame – and much needed. He shot 35.8 percent on treys as a sophomore and an impressive 44 percent as a freshman.

Though Hansbrough and Jackson figure to dominate the guard minutes, freshman wing Joey Brooks should work his way into the mix.

The only other scholarship guard on the roster is vastly improved senior Jonathan Peoples, who made two starts last season and averaged 14.1 minutes per game.

Notre Dame Frontcourt

Harangody, who has 50 career doubledoubles (a school-record 25 last year), didn’t return to add to his impressive statistical accomplishments – but he will.

He is eighth on Notre Dame’s career scoring list with 1,823 points and is fifth all-time in rebounds with 949.

Brey and the Irish know what they’re going to get from him.

The uncertainty is what the rest of the frontcourt produces. But Martin, a 6-8 sophomore, will ease many of the concerns there. He had a solid freshman year with the Boilermakers before transferring.

Junior reserves Tyrone Nash and Carleton Scott provide depth, but they will have to fend off a trio of solidly-built 6-9 freshmen for playing time: Mike Broghammer, Thomas Knight and Jack Cooley. Knight, a 255- pounder, was Maine’s Mr. Basketball after averaging 22.9 points and 11.6 rebounds as a senior. Cooley averaged 20.3 points and 13.5 rebounds in the prep ranks last year.

2009-2010 Notre Dame Predictions

This sure sounds like a formula for an NCAA Tournament team: A dominant big man, a senior point guard, two talented transfers who can fill specific needs in the starting lineup and a couple of promising freshmen. So what’s not to like about the Irish? Brey will have to make it all work, but this group has sleeper potential in a year when the Big East is wide open. There’s no way a Notre Dame team with Harangody will miss the NCAA’s two straight years, is there?
