Northern Iowa Panthers vs Michigan State Spartans Preview, Odds & Prediction
The Spartans are in the Sweet Sixteen for the ninth time in 13 seasons, but will be without star point guard Kalin Lucas who went down with in the first half of Sunday’s second-round game against Maryland. Lucas did not return to the game and most-likely is done for the season. Without Lucas, it’s hard to imagine the Spartans winning their first two games. Sophomore backup Korie Lucious’ play will be key from here out. Lucious stepped in for the injured Lucas, scoring 13 points including the game winning 3-pointer against the Terps. However, the Spartans will need to give Lucious some help. The club will look to utilize forwards Draymond Green and Raymar Morgan more as “point forwards,” they did in the second half against Maryland. Rebounding continues to be a major edge for MSU, and they will need to capitalize on every opportunity both on the offensive and defensive glass.
It took Northern Iowa 20 years to finally win another game in the NCAA Tournament as they stunned the basketball word in a second round shocker over No 1 ranked Kansas on Saturday. The Panthers flexed their muscles with physical play in the paint, clutch shooting and an all-around solid defensive effort. The Panthers are second in the country in scoring defense at 54.8 points per game. UNI isn’t the most athletic team, so even when the Panthers don’t shoot well, their tenacious man-to-man defense keeps them in every game. The Panthers field an experienced team, with six players including 7-foot, 280-pound senior center Jordan Eglseder, Kwadzo Ahelegbe, Ali Farokhmanesh and Johnny Moran, all who are veteran guards and have played together the last two seasons.
The odds makers have the Spartans as -1 ½ -point favorites.
Expect the Spartans to be a bit more wary then the unsuspecting Jayhawks in this one, wining by three.
