Northern Iowa Players to Watch: Kwadzo Aheleabe had more turnovers than assists last season, but his leadership helped take the Panthers to unprecedented heights. His will to win and relentlessness make up for some of his shortcomings.

2010-2011 Northern Iowa Season Preview

What can Ben Jacobson do for an encore? Jacobson’s 2009-10 team enjoyed the finest season in Northern Iowa basketball history. The Panthers won 30 games, finished with a No. 13 ranking in the coaches’ poll and made it to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. They got there by scoring the biggest upset of the tournament, defeating No. 1 ranked Kansas 69-67 in the second round. Jacobson must do some retooling to replace three starters and two role players from last season’s team. Gone are 7-foot Jordan Eglseder, who led the team in scoring and rebounding; 6-8 Adam Koch, the Valley’s Player of the Year, and 3-point specialist Ali Farokhmanesh, whose last-second shot to beat Kansas will be shown for . years to come. Northern Iowa does return starters in point guard Kwadzo Ahelegbe, a nails-tough competitor who was the Valley Tournament’s Most Valuable Player, and guard Johnny Moran, who battled injuries and inconsistency last season in weathering a sophomore slump. Six other lettermen return, including rugged Lucas O’Rear, the winner of the past two Valley Sixth Man of the Year awards, and Jake Koch, whose improved play down the stretch has him penciled into his older brother’s starting spot in the lineup. O’Rear and Jake Koch figure prominently in filling Northern Iowa’s primary need – shoring up the inside attack with the loss of Adam Koch and Eglseder, who blossomed as a senior after three injury-plagued seasons. Austin Pehl is the tallest returning letterman at 6-10, but he saw only limited action last season. Forward Nate Buss, at 6-8, has the most size of the newcomers, but the Panthers figure to field one of the league’s more undersized frontcourts. In order to compensate, Northern Iowa likely will keep ratcheting things up on the defensive end. The Panthers finished second in the nation last season in scoring defense (55.1 points per game) and set a Valley Tournament record by holding three opponents to an average of 44.0 points.
