2010-2011 North Carolina State Season Preview

For the first time in five years, Sidney Lowe faces the reasonable expectation of reaching the NCAA Tournament. He has dealt with those expectations before, but they weren’t entirely reasonable. Now, though, with a sensational freshman class joining three returning starters, Lowe must win. Or else? Maybe. He’s 0-for-4 at reaching the NCAA Tournament, an ominous batting average on Tobacco Road, but this should be his best team – and Lowe isn’t denying it.

North Carolina State Backcourt

Javier Gonzalez is running out of chances and time. He has improved every season, but he has kept his job as the Wolfpack’s point guard mainly because the team hasn’t had anyone else. This year, the team has someone else. His name is Ryan Harrow, and he’s a scoring whiz from Georgia who can run a team. And if Lowe benches Gonzalez – as Lowe did each of the past two seasons – Harrow might not give the job back. At the least, Harrow and fellow Georgia native Lorenzo Brown give Lowe more quality backcourt depth than in the past. Harrow can play both guard spots, while Brown will back up sweet-shooting Scott Wood, who made 63 3-pointers last season and has added 15 pounds of needed bulk. Ideally for the Wolfpack, Gonzalez continues his improvement – his scoring average has risen in three years from 3.8 ppg to 6.6 to 9.5 while Harrow gets ready to take over in 2011.

North Carolina State Frontcourt

Chart Tracy Smith’s improvement from his freshman season (3.3 ppg, 1.6 rpg) to sophomore (10.0, 4.5) to junior (16.5, 7.3), and the line rises sharply. Extend that line for one more season, and he becomes a 20-and-10 player as a senior – and it could happen, especially with freshman force C.J. Leslie now attracting attention on the other low block. Smith is a brute-force bully, while Leslie is a freak athlete. Together, they could give the Wolfpack one of the ACC’s most effective one-two combinations near the rim. And there is plenty of depth behind them. Richard Howell and C.J. Williams were playing their best basketball in March, while Jordan Vandenberg and DeShawn Painter are solid options for the end of the bench. Smith is the established star, and the rotation is deep, but Leslie is the one generating the buzz.

2010-2011 North Carolina State Predictions

You can see how it happens. Smith and Gonzalez continue their significant annual improvement. Wood is stronger, a better shooter as a sophomore, and more consistent. The depth is better. And Leslie is a star befitting his McDonald’s All-American pedigree. All of that happens, and the Wolfpack rack up 25 victories and – instead of winning games m the NIT – are winning games in the 2011 NCAA Tournament. That’s how it happens. But if that’s not how it happens, there could be a new coach in Raleigh next season.

    Zach,
I looked and there is not a sportsbook offering lines on the new NC State Coach. But my bet is on Wichita State’s Gregg Marshall. He’s done a great job at WSU and Winthrop. And he likes the Carolina area.
